In 1968 there was a fantastic 17-percent increase in crime over 1967. This came on top of many years of other large increases. The population, however, grew only one percent last year. So crime exploded seventeen times as fast as the population!
That's simple math, right?
It is "funny" - for those of us who understand it, but I never stop being amazed at how difficult it is for many to do percentage math or calculate increase/decrease or combine this with "x times as many", "threefold", "half as many", "three and a half times the size" etc. Tell a number to a journalist and you are almost certain of it being misunderstood.
