For the first time scientists have successfully reversed a naturally occurring magnetic field. It could have multiple implications:

I read the article Careful, and it sounds like scientists are pretty clever, growing crystals, making sure they 'kept it pure', but I am not sure what they will use this 'technology' for? Reversing polarity at the 'flick of a switch'.
Any idea?

If it doesn't have any practical application it brings us a little step closer to understand magnets. Keep I mind magnetic fields are atoms. Were ultimately trying to learn to controll them. In the last year a paper was published saying the eltromagnetic engine works and space testing will be happening soon. I thought I heard awhile back about scientist making magnets that are stronger depending on what light frequency/color is shined on them. -

The bushy one's father gave a magnet to little Albert, and the rest is history. Hope to have a erudite poster here comment on it. ( can electromagnets be reversed in polarity? )
Although the article is in NATURE mag., journalists often write short of the crucial details, and ramifications. It is known that the Earth's magnetic field has reversed several times, so be prepared re-configurate your compasses in the eternal PpP.

days of future passed
There was a program on this years ago. They could tell by ancient pottery that the field had changed since it was made. I seem to remember reading that they thought it was close to switching a few years ago. Guess it's like Armeggedon, always coming but not here yet.
