There are a lot of errors in this writing. My guess was that the newspaper itself did a lot of them.

The following, according to what I've read from the Bulgarian Government papers, available on the web, seem quite accurate:

According to the European Commission of Human Rights, representatives of Jehovah's Witnesses made a legal agreement with the government of Bulgaria. It states: "The applicant undertook, with regard to its stance on blood transfusions, to draft a statement, for inclusion in its statute, providing that members should have free choice in the matter for themselves and their children, without any control or sanction on the part of the association."

The above seemed accurate with the Bulgarian Government Press Release.

"Spokesmen subsequently denied the sect had changed its doctrine, and reiterated that any Witness violating the ban would face "disfellowshipping". The authorities in Strasbourg and Bulgaria were led to think otherwise. By the summer of 1998, Witnesses in Scandinavia were unofficially following the Bulgarian lead. Olle Hjarpe, the Watchtower spokesman in Sweden, told the Helsingborgs Dagblad: "To receive blood is a question of personal conscience. Earlier members were disfellowshipped if they accepted a blood transfusion. This is not the case now."

"This is not the case now." That is a true statement - as far as it goes. Now, according to what's been printed here and elsewhere, any JW who accepts an unacceptable part of blood, or whole blood, according to WTBTS definition of the components, will be considered to "have disassociated himself."

Which, unless you actually want to be considered an anti-Christ, is a negative place to find yourself.

Lee Elder, on h20, made a post as to possible reasons the Society has made these changes, etc.
One reason was very interesting:

In his opinion, the change of the component system was very major. However, the R&F, IMO, don't understand the ramifications, including me.

Also in his opinion, the going from df'd to da'd might be a smoke screen to keep apostates and others making too much of the actual blood abstaining change.

The thing that thrills me to death is:It's in the news. People are reading it-not only JW's. And
maybe somebody with a great deal of influence will
make it "their cause too." Regardless of errors the public's got ahold of it now. I'd like to see them run a picture of the cover of the May
22, 1994 issue of Awake- the one with Youths Who Put God First on the cover. Advertise, Advertise, Advertise!!

Seven: I personally knew one of those youths in that Awake, namely Joshua Wood. They were in our congregation for a long time and a number of their family still are.

Frenchy, I hope that I didn't leave you with the impression that I felt no compassion for the young people on that Awake cover and just looked at them as a way to gain publicity for the blood issue. I am very sorry. That was thoughtless of me
and I apologize. I just get so excited when I hear
that someone-anyone in the world is reading and talking about this. As long as the stories are being written there's a small chance some reporter
will take this story and run with it. Remember the
Elian Gonzalez saga? Wouldn't it be beyond our wildest dreams to have coverage of that magnitude?
I think Jehovah is waiting on usto do something about this-so let's keep doing whatever it takes.

Dear Seven: There is nothing to apologize for. I didn't take your post as being insensitive or thoughtless. I just wanted to say that I knew one of those kids personally. I know you enough to never impute a bad motive to one of your posts. I think that it is so sad that these young people had to die needlessly. Perhaps not all but some may have been saved or at least had their lives prolonged by transfusions.
