Following on from the demon post....Has anyone here seen anything paranormal (eg out of the ordinary)?? (UFO's, Ghosts, etc)

Here's the only thing i've seen that I consider weird. I'll reproduce an email of mine for you all.

But before that i'll fill you in with some details. In Australian folklore there is a creature called the Yowie. It's described as half human - half Ape, between 4ft and 12 ft tall, omnivorous, known to attack and kill humans*, kill livestock, raid orchards for fruit, or sometimes do harmless window visits on unsuspecting victims.

You Yanks call this creature Bigfoot or Sasquatch in your country.

    * Not all Yowies are dangerous as some have been known to be harmless/benign/playful.

The Yowie is supposedly only folklore but there's been hundred's of sightings since 1788 to this current day. See the website http://www.yowiehunters.com for more details.

    Here's the email:

    Hi!,

You might have read my posts and thought that i'm a skeptic, well a long time ago I thought I saw something that you guys call a Yowie. When I was aged 3-5 (i'm now aged 22) I used to live in Canberra and cos it was cold in winter we used to go chopping for wood. Well, one day about 1983 my whole family (mum, dad and me) and 2 others went chopping for wood in a forest about an hours drive from Canberra (we went chopping at that same site every month or so). I remember on this occasion while the rest of the party was chopping and collecting wood (mum was watching them), I went to have a rest (got bored easy then) in the car (car was about 30 feet from the tree line and a fair way (about 50 metres) from the rest of them (Don't quote me on distance cos i'm hopeless at it)). After getting bored after 5 minutes, I opened the rear passenger side door facing the forest while I was laying down down on the seat. I gazed into the forest to see a creature about 20 feet in from the edge of the clearing. Well this thing saw me (took about 2 or 3 seconds to look at me after I opened the door. It had been gazing at my parents and friends as they were cutting sick with chainsaws and axe's) and stood and stared at me. I didn't feel threatened or scared. I'd describe the creature as about 5ft tall, heavy set, dark chocolate coloured hair, magpie coloured eyes (maroon - blood coloured), face was sort of like a gorilla's (I nicknamed it "Gorilla-man" and "Monkey-man" after I saw it). It was very ape-like yet had more of the form of a human. I didn't believe what I saw. I used to like Apes (still do) when I was younger (I used to have a monkey as a teddy bear (I called it monkey). I knew my parents had a camera in the front seat so I got up and reached over (it was an XB Falcon) and got the camera. I took 3 or 4 pics out of the opened car door, in the direction of the thing (I didn't look I just clicked and pointed. but after taking the pics I realised he was gone). I haven't really checked the pictures but I remember that they didn't have "it" in them. All it was was a picture of half a car door and forest

I've never told this story b4 to anyone and even now i'm confused and still don't believe I saw it.

    Thanks,

    From AK

    Anyone got anything?

I saw this creature once, it was gruesome. Ugly and horrible.

Turns out I was looking in the mirror.

    G'day AK,

I bet that was in the forest EAST of Canberra (I could be wrong but Brown Mountain is well known for Yowie sightings - especially the Bombala side)

The guys story has cred - photographing wildlife is a lot harder than most people think (even with a good camera and some experience I'm finding wildlife photography difficult - my hat comes off to Sir David Rabbitboroughs team and their like) - these creatures are taken seriously by most National Park Rangers and farmers within 100 miles of here.

There are so many weird creatures in the bush well informed observant locals are the best guide to know what's normal (recently I recorded a bird that sounded just like a large frog and an owl with a blood curdling scream) It's like the search for living Tasmanian tigers - infared cameras and 'hair traps' are being placed for DNA sampling. (I'll email you my yowie stories and more info when I get time, better still come camping where 'the howling' is heard

Rex Gilroy has written several books recording reputable yowie sightings and his discoveries (such as the Gympie Pyramid etc..) He has a museum with many of his finds at Blackheath in the Blue mountains. The recent video taping of the 'Blue Mountains Panther' has the world of zooligy abuzz and again validates his work. Rex really throws himself into his research (a few years ago he spent 3 weeks in the massive, mosquito and leach infested Wolomi swamp 60 miles west of Sydney, trying to bring back evidence of giant reptiles reputed to live there. He recordded some sounds and a footprint. The area has an interesting history - it's near where they found the ancient Wolumi Pine - he won't reveal the exact location but by searching old maps I recon I found it - the abandonedd farms have names like 'run while you can' - true - that one is even on the latest survey map (1972)

Cameras and other recording devices are the only way to verify accounts to others (if we feel the need to do that) our human sences are piss weak and easily decieved. I say if I see such a creature I'll rush up and give it a bear-hug in the name of science (I might die but it'll be with a DNA sample in my hand - wife and I have been scared witless more than once by the 'paranormal' and recons I'm mad

Logical - How about I leave you alone for a few days in the spooky living forest with a tent, some food and a camera

This is what I basically saw.

If I saw one of those 12ft ones i'd die of fright.

    Bloody hell LOL,

OK Here's one of two incidents that happened to me personally (my neighbours all have similar or more dramatic stories) People don't talk about these things much unless you initiate the conversation. So the first time I had any incling we might be in 'yowie country' my wife and I were camped on our block enjoying a quiet read one Sunday arvo about 2.30pm.

The peace and quiet was suddenly broken by a wailing sound something like one of those hand cranked WWII air raid sirens starting up and ending in a deep boom (it's maker obviously had a large chest cavity)
While I fixed my attention on where the noise was comming from, Susan stood up looked at me and said very firmly "Lee, where are the keys .. I'm leaving!" (this was very strange behaviour for my mild mannered misses) any way, after forcing her to stay a little longer, 5 minutes later the sound came again aproximatly 1/2 a kilometer up the creek (this time I recorded it on a micro-cassette)

Now I had a fix on the creatures direction and approximate speed (that creek is steep and full of boulders and for me to cover that same distance would take at least 15-20 minutes .. maybe longer)

I let Susan in the car and off we flew up the track (she didn't seem too alarmed that we were headed in that direction (the only way out) and it was fairly obvious I was trying to meet whatever it was where the creek met the road. No such luck ... all was quiet higher up the ridge and I wasn't altogether upset Susan forbade me to leave the car

Later I played my recording to National Park rangers who had a good listen to it and my rendition of the yowie mating call and after much discussion proclaimed "it must have been a yowie" ... bloody hell!

That was my first 'Harry and the Hendersons adventure'. I'm hoping Farkel will join me later in the year to join in the yowie hunt.

PS: If you can possably obtain the photos they may well be worth another look. As for 'dieing of fright' that explains all those missing hikers

Uncle Bruce: Maybe next BBQ we can go Yowie hunting up Blue Mountains way.

Can you think of anyone else who would also like camping miles away from civilization in the freezing cold?

    Any volunteers???
