Eman will be interested in this piece of latest news on the Nationwide site:

Smertin makes shock Pompey move 27 Aug

Portsmouth have completed the loan signing of Chelsea's new Russian midfielder Alexei Smertin, subject to the granting of a work permit. Smertin has only just moved to Stamford Bridge in a £3.5million deal but he will now spend the rest of the season with Pompey. The 28-year-old watched Portsmouth move to the top of the Premiership table with victory against Bolton on Tuesday. "It is further proof that we are not resting but improving on what we have," Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric told the club's official website. "It was a superb performance against Bolton last night but we keep moving, keep improving. "Alexei is a superb player and the sort of team member we are looking to bring in to build on the strengths we already have. "We must have made football history by bringing in a captain of his country who two days before signed for Chelsea. "I don't need to extol his virtues because he is captain of his country and Chelsea have just paid £3.5million for him."

What gives? Were Chelsea just plain greedy. or what? Good on 'arry for taking advantage. He always was a canny bloke. Must be his playing days on the wing!!

    It's barmy!

    Unless............

Unless Chelsea simply wanted to keep him out of reach of Man U or Arsenal, those 2 being the most likely contenders for this years title. This way, they keep control, Pompey are unlikely (gasp!) to pose a threat, so he plays for Pompey, his wages are paid for him by Pompey and Chelsea can grab him back next season.

    Englishman.

How about this for a conspiracy theory:

The new overlord of Chelsea is a Russian who has acquired billions of roubles since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The player signed by Chelsea and passed on by them is the captain of the Russian national team.

Were they doing him a favour? Was there something in it about gaining work in the UK?

Us ex-Dubs are very good at conspiracy theories!!!

    Cheers, Ozzie

What better way of laundering money than spending it on football players? Tens of millions of pounds can be cleared in just a few weeks.
