Corporate stupidy (doors and blind people)

I work for a large company. The site I am on has several thousand people on it.

    Some of them are stupid.

To be fair, I think it's the group-think effect that creates corporate stupidity where no one has the gumption or the energy to stand up and say "this is a dumb idea".

The latest example of this happened today. We've been in the current open-plan office for about 2 years. Someone, somewhere felt the need to arrange to have two guys come round and hang signs saying "Exit" from the ceiling pointing to the doors. The signs are 2 - 3 feet from the door and now get hit by them when you come in (just waiting for them to fall off and hit someone). Now, maybe I'm uniquely advanced but I can figure out that a door is what you use to go out of and I know what the door looks like. Especially when the only way you got in the office was using the door itself (Windows aren't an option, they don't open and we're on the 3rd floor).

To help people further I've stuck a post-it note on the door with "Door" written on and one with an arrow saying "Handle".

This is the same company that arrange to have a 100% blind man work as a web designer !!

    I kid you not.

Simon- do these signs that someone made replace other exit signs? Forgive my lack of knowledge here- do the buildings there have lighted "exit" signs in general? Here we have to have them- fire code. And the fire department makes a sweep every 4 months to check on everything- including the exit signs- to make sure the bulbs aren't out etc. The women in the office always like it when the firemen come around Do they not have this kind of requirement in buildings over there?

    A blind web designer? Wow.

These are new signs ... they just seem so, so ... well pointless !

Yes, the blind guy was given the job as a web designer and designed a site. TO be fair, it wasn't the dogs breakfast or colors etc... that I expected but it did take months and only consisted of 1 page. At the end of it he was sent on some away day as a thankyou for doing such a great job. He 'only' managed to raise umpteen support calls and get half a dozen people involved helping him do it

Of all the jobs to give a blind man ... but I guess it's good for a big corporates 'disabilities' stats.

Simon, you reminded me of when I worked for this two-color house as their Art Director. We got in a lawsuit because me would not hire a blind pressman! Only in California! Another time the President of the company had me spend two months putting together a proceedures manual. The legal bill alone was over $1000.oo Had the thing printed and everything. Then changed his mind and had a staffer gather them up and shread them! Was a good manual too! I put up with that kind of crap for two years! Maverick

    Good one Simon!

I'm glad to know America isn't unique in the dumbing down of society. Unfortunately Simon, signs like that which you and I may consider unnecessary are in fact necessary for some of our intelligence-challenged fellow humans. People can be just plain stupid these days.

I don't know whether it's because I'm sick, or because it's 3.30am or because I'm usually on a different planet to everyone else most of the time, but I took this to read as:

doors-and-blind people - as in people who make and sell blinds and doors

It's ok, you can all go back to your regularly scheduled programming now.

    Simon,

So that explains why we get so many glitches on this Forum!

(Please don't delete me, Simon, I like blind people!)
