The Brits sometimes use a form of rhyming slang. It's origins are with the Cockneys i.e. east-enders of London.
So 'apples and pears' means stairs. It rhymes, you see.
Now what does 'Adam and Eve' rhyme with?
You got it... it's 'believe'.
