The root of misogyny - men don't like mirrors

You know, sometimes hearing just one little thing can change your whole outlook on something. Last night I was watching the movie "The Big Kahuna" (Danny Devito, Kevin Spacey). The movie was more like a play, 95% of it was a dialogue between the 3 main characters - 3 industrial lubricant salesmen pondering some of the heavier things in life whilst trying to land the big sale (the big kahuna). Sounds like a strange premise, but the movie is quite good, I plan on watching it again before I take it back to the video store.

Anyways, at one point in the film, Danny Devito's character says to one of the other salesmen:

"God created women to be mirrors, so a man can see what an ass he is."

A profound truth imho (except the "God created" part, but that wasn't the point of it). I now understand why Islamic fundies like the Taliban and to a lesser degree Xtian fundies like JW's try to keep their women in a position of weakness. They want to mold the mirror into something that either reflects them well or not at all, or they want to put so much fear and projected inferiority into the mirror that the reflection becomes irrelevant in their mind. Because men don't like to see what asses they are.

It hit home with me especially because I tend to be a bit of a woman hater, I must admit.

Just some pointless ramblings that will probably be ignored. At any rate, I highly recommend the movie.

Great movie. Can't say I keyed in on that line though.

I saw that movie just as I was on the cusp of leaving the truth lie. It was eye-opening to me, to see these peoples sincerity in their own form of spirituality.... I identified with Spaceys contempt for the fundy mindset, but of course I identified also with the young fundy in the "worldly" situation; and at the same time I was struck by, and saw the truth in, his sincerity.

I remember thinking "bullshit. god's not gonna kill any of those three characters or people like them at armageddon".

I am the opposite -- I think women are wonderul and I worship the ground they walk on - that is why to me the Taliban amongst other reasons are the scum of the earth - nearly as bad as child molesters

Six, I had those same thoughts all the time as a JW when I would watch movies or TV - "these people are all gonna get squashed at Armageddon??" For instance, when I would watch Ohio State football with other JW's and they'd be all "Go Buckeyes!" and that, and I'd be thinking "wait, aren't these people on death row according to what we believe?" The longer I was a JW, the more I didn't think about the things I didn't think about. But that kind of pressure can only be bottled for so long.

The movie had a lot of gems of wisdom, without being too preachy - like where Danny Devito is telling the young salesman (a devot Baptist) about how he is not acting like a human, but only a marketing rep when he tries to work a Jesus sermon into every conversation. Reminded me of the guilt I felt whenever as a JW I would have normal conversations with "worldlings" and I made no effort to bring up JWism. Like I was supposed to be a ********* marketing rep all the time.

ex-elder, I could learn a lot from you! The line in the movie reminded me of a picture I in Time magazine recently of 3 Taliban men conversing on a street corner. Their facial expressions screamed - here are men who have no idea what asses they are because they cover their women from head to toe and don't listen to a word they say.

frenchbabyface - thank goodness you don't live in Afghanistan where that pretty face of yours would be all covered up! The movie was very good, I had never heard of it until a friend recommended it to me, I don't know if you'll be able to find it in France or not.

Very profound insight, Dan. Thanks so much for writing it and sharing it with us.

And it goes right back to Adam and Eve. If Adam was so damn superior, why was he such a dumbass and ate the apple.

    Beautiful Garbage,
