Me and my fiance were discussing this last night when I suddenly forgot where I was! (Just kidding).

But on a serious note, My short-term memory is lousy, and my mother's all around memory is crap. She suffered physical and sexual abuse as a child, and she passed the physical abuse onto me. I've read a little bit on how head trauma can cause damage to the brain. Does anyone else have this problem, and have you been able to do anything about it?

    Could you repeat the question?

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I can relate to your memory problems. As a kid i was punched in the face or had my head slammed against a wall till i would almost blackout. It does scare me sometimes.I had done some research on head injurys and found any time the head is moved in a fast or hard jolt it causes some permenant damage to the brain. That is not to say that you have this,it could be you have a hectic life with a lot of stress and a lot of thoughts going on in your head all at once.Sometimes just slowing down may help.I am sorry for what your mother did, no child should have to live and have those memories. I have been thrown into walls, choked, kicked etc., and
I can still remember my husband laughing at me while he did it, so
I'd have to say that my memory seems to be working alright

I've had for years infrequent shooting nerve pains down the left side of my face and ear. Never know when they're coming - but they will stop me immediately. Like hitting your crazy bone. My husband was the first to ask, "was your father right or left handed?" (or it could be a brain tumor, eh?)

On some levels I can still actually *see* his hand coming down upon the leftside of my face.....like a bat outta hell. That whole side of my head automatically freezes up and I can see the shadow coming from the side. He was a boxer when young - strong man.

Lovely memories our parents/mates leave us sometimes, eh?

As for memory? Yeah, I have short-term problems & long term - just depends, and definitely not all the time. But, so did my mother (so it could be hereditary.) But, my mother had the crap beat out of her for a good portion of her life by her father, and my father (so it could be abuse.) Or it could be both.

Whatever..........we outgrow our abusers with effort - and become better people in spite of them.

    Hey nilfin,

Sorry about your life with your lousy husband - and I'm assuming it's over? Good - you've come further than a lot of abuse victims.

If you're still with him, I hope you rethink your situation.

    Take care.

It could depend on the age you started getting hit on the head.

Also, it could be, because you have tried to block out some of your past childhood, which is way easier to do then deal with it. anyway, when you do this, it seems your memory isn't the greatest. I have always had problems remembering things. Feeling stupid. Because I couldn't remember anything. But, lately I have been going to theropy and unlocking my past. And it has actually improved my memory. I now know my name at all times <smiles>
