Just a quick example of how the study of the Bible without pious blinders on provides new insight. A couple years ago I found a commentary on jeremiah that opened my eyes. It was news to me that the book was one of the most easily demonstrated examples of textural corruption. Ther Septuigent version of the book is shorter by nearly 40%. The small piece recovered in the Qumran scrolls has similarities to the Septuigent yet represents yet another version of the book. The book is full of conflations and doublets. For one example compare Jer. 52:7-11,13-16 with 2 Kings 25:4-7,9-12. The editor of the book at this point made little effort to conceal his source material. He simply cut and pasted. An honest look at the Bible with a critical and educated eye reveals it to be simply another example of literature that has been reworked as the needs of the people/priests changed.

I always thought they were using past scriptures to validate new prophecies....maybe like say something enough times and you will start to believe? Oh and BTW, my favorite verse and about the only one I remember besides Luke 9:49 is Jeremiah 25:27..

Isn't it jeremiah where the latter part is supposed to have been written yrs after the first? Do you remember the name of the commentary?

SS...I'm having trouble posting at home again, so I have to do it at work most times. This means depending on my memory and this means I make mistakes. The Septuigent is about 20% shorter not 40% than the Masoretic. There are 4 fragmentary forms of Jeremiah found at Qumran. The most recent conclusions are that the Septuigent and Qumran froms are actually derivative of a now lost ancient form of the text and the Masoretic, a second later form with even more interpolations and other inclusions. The texts of each form contains material (word, phases, paragraphs) that is not in any of the other versions demonstrating an even greater variation than simply 2.

I found the book at the University library again to give you the exact title. "Empirical Models for Bibical Criticism by Jefferey Tigray ISBN 0-8122-7976-x The chapter is entitled "the Literary History of the Book of Jeremiah in the Light of Its Textural History" by Emanuel Tov (1985)

The book was great and timely for me when I was struggling with 1 Sam and the odd reading about David and Goliath. I learned that there are 3 very different forms of 1Sam in the DSS and that the story was pieced together from 2 different contradicting legends.

You know, I sort of am embarrassed to admit it, but it's true, the Bible does go out of its way to distract non-believers and has many things that only can be revealed by holy spirit as secret understanding to the anointed. So if you're not of the "anointed" the Bible might prove to be confusing and diappointing. But then again, it was written for them and not entirely for the public at large. The anointed understand how the Bible works and it's secret, esoteric message which is primarily for them.

"Written BY crazy people, FOR crazy people."

    Good slogan.

lol @ Valis for citing Jeremiah 25:27 "drink and get drunk and puke and fall down so that you cannot get up because of the sword I am sending among you" or something like that.

Or -- "get drunk" with Botchtower teachings that make you "puke".

So the Bible is "esoteric" and can only be understood by a few anointed?

Sounds like what the medieval Catholic leaders said when they tried to keep the Bible out of the hands of the public.

Sounds like what the Watchtower says when they say you should only read the Bible with the accompaniment of THEIR explanatory literature.

Either the Bible is God's word for the common man, to lead to his salvation, or else it is merely another work of man filled with guesses and mumbo-jumbo to make it sound like they have something special.

I'm not buying this "it's God's Word but only known by a few" garbage.

That is a standard tenet of cults. The teaching that only "they" have god given ability to interpret verse thereby creating dependence and misplaced loyalty by suppressing independent thought.
