AP - More and more people are succumbing to so called "technology addictions," spending hours tapping on mobile phones or surfing the Internet, one of Britain's best known psychiatric clinics said on Saturday.

"There has been a huge rise in behavioral addictions," including excessive texting, said a spokeswoman for the Priory Clinic which treats 6,000 patients a year for a range of addictions including gambling, eating disorders and drugs.

In the Sunday Telegraph newspaper the head of the clinic's addictions unit said some patients were spending up to seven hours a day text messaging.

"We have a situation where some people look down on alcoholics and cocaine addicts, but then go and spend five hours in an Internet chat room," Dr Mark Collins told the paper.

People will always find something to over indulge in but at least computers are educational and informative , it beats the hell out of getting hammered constantly. They were saying the same stuff about video games and such but hey it's not as bad as they make it out to be . I mean jeeze what safer place for kids to be than at home having fun .

This is SO me. . .I guess I feel that since being online isn't an obvious physical addition, then it doesn't seem as bad.

I get online about 6 am every day to check out the board and text message friends. Depending on how busy it is at work, I'll spend a fair bit of time online as well. And again when I get home from work until about 1 am, sometimes longer. I do plenty of other things too, like read, take courses, watch hockey, go out to bars, camping, hiking, fishing, etc. But I spend alot of time online. I don't think I'm addicted to the internet or anything like that. I just like communicating with my friends. If I meet up with them in person I hardly even think about being online.

So maybe I'm addicted to my buddies!

I agree, Heathen....if my sons are online, I know that they are reading...whether it be game codes, skateboarding sites, or their beloved Lord of the Rings sites.

My son, Gabriel, and I spent hours today online looking for sites on how to build a mousetrap car for his Physics class. We had a ball. My other son, Dominic, was upstairs playing games on his X-Box. I knew where he was ALL DAY LONG! He wasn't out getting in trouble. He was here with me.

Then we put the "thing" together. All of us. So, I don't see the problem.

Now, excuse me.....I have lots of porn sites to check out.....

    Love...April
