When used appropriately caveats and qualifiers are entirely appropriate. The listener must recognize the intent is to present a possible, maybe even a probable, explanation. When they are used excessively however, they get tuned out and become mere expressions of feigned humility. The manipulative intent can be to present this image of humility as well as provide deniability for failure.
