In 1983 , 241 Americans were murdered in Beirut by a homicide truck bomber. Almost all of the dead were Marines, Army, or Navy, and very young. Today the survivors and surviving family members have gathered to remember their dead family and comrades. Many of the young men who survived the blast had to be dug out of rubble. Imagine the relief that the searches felt when they found survivors.

Immediately following this disaster President Reagan appointed D.Rumsfeld to his cabinet. I remember the scene when President Reagan spoke to the surviving family members, and after he spoke he went into the audience and shook the hand or hugged and kissed every single man woman and child in the audience. His compassion was as overwhelming as the disaster had been devastating. In a country where buracracy had become numbing, we saw a President who wanted to genuinely reach out to his fellow countrymen in their distress.

Yes Ronnie was a good one - a true leader -- to think we were lucky enough to have him and Margaret Thathcher on the world satge at the same time -- and they won the cold war without firing a shot - sigh how I long for those times again in some ways - obviously I do not long for terrible tragedies that happened in Beirut

I adored President Reagan. He was a "good guy". I am very upset that CBS has decided to lie about the President's view of AIDs. They have a totally fabricated statement that should be removed from the made for TV film . They don't even address the times Pres.Reagan was visiting little aids babies in hospitals and orphanages. And no one seems to give him credit for his unpopular political stand in his speech in Berlin "Mr.Gorbachev, take down this wall."

Regan was a decent man. The main thing I like about him was that he did things to win. While democrats were screaming how his Star Wars program would really piss off the Russians, or that the plan was "barbaric" and uncivilized he just kept right on beating the drum. He didn't seem to care if the French got mad. This president wanted victory.... not endless waring.

The result? The Russians came to the table and said basically what do we need to do to get you to stop this Star Wars thing. Regan replied that he had no intention of stopping and furthermore he wanted to share the technology with Russia so that no one could peemptively strike with nuclear weapons. By the time the talks were over, so was the massive threat of world nuclear annialtion.

He had guts and did not believe in "preemptive surrender"

Reagan was one of the greatest presidents ever, he ended the cold war and grew the US economy on an unprecedented level...this one incident though, was his greatest failure. The US turned and ran from Lebenon after this...which only encouraged more acts of terrorism against the US culminating in 9-11.

Yeah, Reagan would have been the perfect President to wipe out terrorism. Maybe the information he got didn't relate to the real dangers of terrorism, but then again after the Beirut murder of 241 Americans ... maybe more should have been investigated.

I always wondered why the press hated Nancy Reagan so much. They really vilified her every action. Yet how many of them would show such love and loyalty to their sick spouse?

Yeru: Glad you're back ... Our Lt. in Iraq got shipped to Germany and will now be going to Ft.Hood for further surgery. I don't want to hate Iraqi's ... But if you saw the devastation of this family ... I better let it go.

Stillelder, Zion, Perry, and Yeru ... thank you all for responding to this post. I remember the day the Marines were killed, I was thinking that more people would remember such a tragedy. Thanks again, Panda
