NORTHAMPTON: Jehovah?s Witness Joel C Bias (33), formerly of Athol, was tried in Hampshire Superior Court on two counts of indecently assaulting and battering a 14-year-old Amherst girl who said she did not consent to his touching her on the buttocks when he was by a 28-year-old man at church went to trial Thursday in Hampshire Superior Court. Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Linda Pisano told jurors that on two separate occasions in early 1998 the girl was attending services at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Amherst and left to use the rest room. Pisano said on returning to the main room, Bias was at the doorway, reached out, hugged her and put his hands on her buttocks, Pisano said. She froze then went to her seat both times. She said his actions were unwanted but defense attorney Thomas Estes, from the Committee for Public Counsel Services in Northampton said she did not tell Bias to remove his hands and ''had no reaction at all.'' He added 2 JWs have the job of standing next to the door at the hall; Bias had this job 'on different occasions.' The incidents were dealt with by the JWs and Bias told police he thought he had satisfied their discipline requirements.
