I'm sure it was just to get in the shade out of the heat. I've suffered through those outdoor assemblies, baking in the sun for hours. It's awful.

That and they have cameras, projecting it. My guess is that they want a clean background with minimal shadow.

Maybe he had to be that far back to keep the backdrop in the frame. It may also have to do with the shadow, which could cause contrast problems in the video if he was partially covered by the shadow.

I think MeanMrMustard and pseudoxristos are correct; they wanted to avoid having the background get cluttered.
Next time they'll need to build a bigger flat and anchor it to the stage securely.
