Me and Quotes were talking about rehabing child abusers and he had a great comparison that made me think. Here goes................

He compared it to us guys in general and said ok Beans what if someone told you that you couldn't look at hot chicks ever again and were banned from talking to them forever and were to have no contact what so ever again, could you do it?

    I said, no way, impossible!

After thinking about it from that perspective it really sets in! This is exactly how it is and why these people re-offend. I believe that there is no cure for these people!

One other sad part her in Canada is our judicial system, if someone is guilty of a safety violation they are guilty until proven innocent and do more time than a real criminal and they are coming down hard on safety now and yes it is good. But your child abuser is innocent until proven guilty! SAD!

Since I'm not realy up on Candian law, could someone explain this "safety violation" business to me?

Isn't a safety violation something that's already hard fact though? ie. the only argument they could try to come up with is why what they were doing was really actually safe. I agree, there seems a disparity in the law.

I also agree about the abusers. Most time, they need treatment and supervision and this is what helps protect children from them reoffending. People driving them out of their homes and into hiding makes this less likely and them more dangerous.

Last year in the UK a major newspaper decided to print details of many offenders. Along with the mistakes and false identities which saw many innocent people targetted, many workers in the field said the mob approach was making things worse as the people who previuosly may have been cooperating and seeking help were then disappearing which meant no one was monitoring them.

Exactly. In one of the rougher areas of Portsmouth, a particularly uneducated mob used the Yellow Pages to target paediatricians.

The Justice system is warped Beans, warped. Yes, the %'s of rehabing the pedophiles is next to nil. My oldest son was a victim of pedophilia and to this day he hasn't revealed who the culprit is. He said it would shock us. As eager as I am to know, I'm not pushing the issue.

    then there is also this....

from a pedophiles point of view.... they are told there is no cure, that they are worse then murderers that if caught even prisoners will likely try to murder them.... they have no incentive to turn themselves in and seek help because they are told that no such thing exists... they are made to feel like a werewolf or a vampire for which the only cure is a stake through the heart. This can lead them directly to the most heinous of crimes because of their belief that they will be punished just as bad for a small crime as a larger one, so why not go for the larger and make being caught worth it?

not all pedophiles are dangerous people, they are like everyone else, found on a continuum from those who can handle their problem to those who are likely to murder others, but making them all feel alike can cause the ones in the middle to move to the extreme.

it is rare to see anyone say anything even remotely caring about people who can often be victims from previous events which have caused them to feel like they are out of control and victims themselves of a hideious addiction which is far worse than most others known to men.

Regarding Safety Violations, here in Canada, finally we have gotten strickter laws on safety in the workplace, for years employers have neglected rules to keep production going as in all over.

The opinion of many safety reps at companies is that once a violation occures or someone is hurt automatically his or her supervisor is guilty, this is why on a daily basis we now have to document safety meetings to prove we informed the worker of the daily hazards. So now you have to prove innocence. So this was my point.

But Zen how do you make being caught worth while? every criminals scheme is not to be caught doing what they want and need!

there are always two sorts of gamblers and in that sense criminals too.... a good gambler wins and loses, a bad, or addicted gambler never loses, they just ALMOST WON.... and with criminals there are always the ones who take into account getting caught and the consequences...

if I were to commit any crime I would be cognizant of the consequences of being caught.... for example, take credit card fraud. if I learn that the penalty is more for fraud over a certain amount, I am likely to stay just under that amount... like the difference between misdermenor and felony.... but if the penality is identical no matter what amount I defraud, why should I care and not go for all I can get?

in the case of a pedophile, just one wrong touch can get him the very same consequences of a 1000 victims, there is no motivation for him to stop once he has committed his first offense, no reason not to continue as long as he does not get caught since the stakes are the same in the end.
