to the tune of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
by Gordon Lightfoot
< You have to get the tune firmly embedded in your head and then.... >
The legend lives on from the Kennedy's on down
Of the city well known as Big D
The city it's said never gives up it's dead
if some guy in November turns gloomy.
with weapon in tow and with six bullets more
than his gun had held when 'twas empty,
he steadied his stock and the world watched in shock
and theories, there are a'plenty.
Jack was the pride of the Democrat side
In town for the usual functions.
As president's go he was more loved than most
don't ask me, for I don't know the reason.
The motorcade rolled and the town went on hold
as they left for a ladies club luncheon
Minutes later that day when the route plans changed
could it be some low dirty dealin'
The shots in the ground made a tattletale sound
and another it came fast a sailin'
And everyone knew as Zapruder did slew
that they had best be a bailin'
The Lone Star State was Kennedy's fate
and it ended in true Texas fashion.
When afternoon came they had finally placed the blame
in the face of a media whirlwind.
At a theatre show the policemen did know
exactly where Oswald was hidin'
after the din he was taken in
but he said that they all were a lyin'
The reporters wired in that his alibi was thin
and that he was in fact the lone gunman
But no one can say what had happened that day
though everyone still keeps a tryin'
Does anyone know who was minding the knoll
when the shots turned the minutes to hours?
The onlookers say they'd have made that buffet
had they put just one more mile behind 'em.
There might have been one or there might have been none
it depends on just who you're readin'.
But all that remains are the book deals and fame
and millions and millions of dollars.
Now Oswald was shot yes the farm he had bought
From a thug that he knew as Ruby
They captured the man with the gun still in his hand
Couldn't run for he was too chubby.
The legend lives on from the Kennedy's on down
Of the city well known as Big D
The city it's said never gives up it's dead
When some guy in november turns gloomy.
