Ireland has gone expensive -- in my judgement Scotland is both beautiful and real estate still relatively inexpensive -- the further south you go towards Engalnd and Londo nthe more expensive. If you prefer it much warmer -- parts of France still have relatively low cost real-estate

The north of England has some cheap area's, and as long as you pick your area it can be quite nice too. But I was in Scotland a few weeks ago and was surprised at how cheap the property is up there as long as you don't go for the city centres, and it is very beautiful up there too.

If you know of a place that is relatively cheap to buy property it's best to keep it quiet. Otherwise the greedy Estate Agents will be there pushing up the prices as they have done everywhere else!

Wow SanFranJim,
.. a renovators delight. It's just what I'm looking for - spacious, airy, good neighbourhood, close to Venice, a handypersons dream - renovating could well worth the effort .. how much? $$$$

I was going to say "Albania" but you probably wouldn't want to live there.
I don't really have a clue but I'd imagine somewhere like Spain would be quite inexpensive. You have to watch though 'cause some of these countries have some unusual laws when it comes to property which can mean foreign investors get burnt if they are unaware of them.
