I was watching the cavaliers- spurs game last night and the announcers mentioned how dedmonds mom was a devout jw. And she wouldn't allow her son to play high school basketball because it would take away from service to the church. So fortunately he turned 18 for his senior year , so he didn't need parental consent to play. It was a tough road because of his late start but made it to the nba! Good for him! Obviously a Very smart kid
dewayne dedmon: center for san antonio spurs, grew up a JW.

haha, yeah, cool
there was a story here about him back in 2011
The original link to the story (in the above thread) doesn't work any more - but here's an updated link - it's from Sports Illustrated (14 November 2011 edition)

I watched the game too and had to research after hearing the announcers talk about his story. I read that SI article on him while watching, and it's a great read. I have a new favorite NBA player. I'll be rooting for the guy.

Nice to see someone reach their potential. He''ll never have to say "what if" no matter what the future brings. So much better than the lame stories you see in the Watchtower about high school kids who supposedly (In their dreams!) gave up future professional sports careers for Jehovah.

It was noted that if he listened to the elders he foresaw a future working for minimum wage. Like I said smart kid
