Death By Moose.

I had some guests come in last night and asked me to call 911 in regards to a person hitting a moose with they're car.

Person number one was dead, and person number two was seriously injured. I drove the 5kms up there to help, but they had a few people there helping, and had enough blankets. Plus, the ambulance was on the way, and the RCMP was on site. Not wanting to really see anything ghoulish, I turned around and got the hell outta there. I didn't go there to see the gore... just to help out.

    What a way to go.

I was kinda upset about it last night.. just thinking about it. Someone was dead, just like that. And before that I was pretty happy.

I was wondering how everyone copes with this kind of thing, seeing as I do plan on becoming a paramedic. Any thoughts?

to cope with death is always difficult - paramedics has to be trained to handle it.

Our next door neighbour is an ex-ambulance-man. I don't know how anyone does that job.

We don't have many moose here though so I guess we're ok.

It is horrible though when you hear on the news that someone has been killed in an accident ... probably just got up that morning on their way to work as normal and that's it. Game over. Poor family left behind.

Makes you think and ease off the gass a bit.

When I'm tempted to overtake in a less than absolutely safe place I always think "what's the point?" What am I rushing for? To get to work? Sheesh .. it can wait !!

I work in a job where you see things like that. I've found countless people hung, and seen some horrific self injuries. The first person I found dead shook me up a lot, but since then I've learnt to deal with it, when I see something like that I go onto automatic pilot and just get on with it. And because I can do that, out of all the people I've found I managed to save the life of all but one of them. And somebody reconising you, and walking up and thanking you for cutting them down and ressuscitating them means so much.

Shamus: I am sure you saw Thunders thread about almost getting run over by his own truck.

I can't imagine coping with something like that I have assisted before in a wreck that happened in front of us. I had to lean in and hold the women head to keep her from moving she was screaming it was horribleshe wasn't even bleeding or anything. I love Forensic investigation and would love to be able to help but I just can't handle the carnage.

Not to poke fun, but I haven't had my coffee yet, and I thought your title said "Death by MOUSE!" I was LMAO.

Sorry it wasn't a funny. Hope the other person is okay, glad you didn't see the gore.

Oh Odrade, we do think alike. I thought this thread was going to be about Boris and Natasha. Gawd, I'm dating myself!

Sorry to hear about the tragic accident. Where I grew up we had a lot of people killed by elk, deer, even cows in the roadway. Montana is an open range state, and although there wasn't much rangeland in my part of the state there were a few places where people had a few. It's always hard.

What I have heard is that people that cope with it do it by disassociating themselves from it in some way. Some even develop a morbid sense of humor about it after awhile. My ex husband is a sheriff. While we were married he was a deputy (he has since gotten himself elected). Anyway he would come home with some horrible stories about things he had seen.

I guess the only way to keep going is knowing that you could save a few along the way.
