Funeral Today

I went to a funeral today as part of a military honor guard. The gentleman...retired in Rock Hill South Carolina had spent 30 years in the Army and 20 years in the post office. He'd won the Bronze Star with "V" device in Vietnam. The guy was a real life hero...eight kids and his wife survived him...as did 15 siblings.

I bring this up because something unusual happened at the funeral. I was opening the door for mourners in my (admittedly really sharp looking) uniform...one older African American lady curtsied to me before walking through the door...and did the same for another soldier on our honor team inside the church. Is this a southern thing?

Yessir it is a Southern thing. Very old traditional stuff. Sounds like he had a good long life...one can only hope to have that big of a family and get to experience at least the travel he did, albeit in the armed forces. Do you have to do honor guard duty often or is it a voluntary thing?

    Sincerely,

    District Overbeer

It's an assigned duty done on a rotating roster...but I like doing it...not because people died to receive the honors...but because they deserve the honor because of their service. Shoot, surviving 20 years as a postal employee without getting shot was an accomplishment.

    LOL

Should it be "shoot surviving..." (no comma)
