After all the dust settles it appears that the only thing the WTS can hang its hat on is that Jesus approved what the WTS was doing to further the kingdom interests in 1918/9 - no matter the changes of New Light before and since. So just what was it that the WTS doing at that time? Selling copies of The Finished Mystery printed in 1917. Courtesy of heraldmag.org here is the text of that book http://www.heraldmag.org/olb/bsl/Library/Comntary/Rev/FINISH/vol7.pdf At sites like FreeMinds and Shaun's Research there's some good brief analytical work on many of the 1500 "errors" contained therein. If you'd like to send the definitive work to your favorite JW to review in the privacy of his own home, then he can determine himself if this is the sort of thing Jesus must have approved of, since there is no claim by the WTS that he came back to correct it.
Jesus chose the WTS in 1918/9, it's the only absolute!

this IS MY FAVORITE topic with jw's. the so called inspection jesus did from 1914-1918 and choose the wt in 1919 when rutherford was cleanzed after a year in jail. i ask the jw's wow that was great that jesus did a 4 year inspection of all religions and choose the wt in 1919. it must have been great to be with the wts in 1914-1918 . and i bet all the angels in heaven were singing songs of praise along with jesus. this is the greatest thing i ever heard. then i ask the jw don't you want to feel like jesus did in 1918 about the wts? because i sure do...so lets have a study on wt books from 1914-1918 . so we can be as happy as jesus was with the wts in 1919. at this point they are dead in the water. next to no active jw has ever read any wt's from the time. ,and i already set my standard with them that this is the only thing i will study with them, because i want to feel like jesus did in 1918. so there you have it. an other current wt teaching, that no jw can defend.... john

Yup, Jesus, the Master, approved of what they were doing because, obviously, they were the only ones "measuring up" to the Master's direction. And to prove that, they went to jail because of the hard-hitting material! Yup, the Master was pleased that these Bible Students were the only ones giving the TRUTH, as opposed to the clergymen of "false religion". So what, all their dates were wrong. Who cares that all their prophecies were false! Big deal that they venerated the cross, celebrated birthdays and pagan Christmas. The Master didn't seem to give a hoot.

Is it not true that in 1918/19 the Watchtower was declaring that it was chosen in 1878? If that is so, Jesus inspected all the world's religions and picked the one that was already sure it was picked 40 years earlier!
Despire their being presumptuous he chose them anyway and later on informed them that he had chose them, but not when they thought, rather it was much later. And he didn't tell them immediately he let them go on deluding themselves for several years.

yea, but most JW's would just say the bible students around 1914-1918 were the ONLY religion teaching the truth about the human soul, the trinity, hellfire, future paradise earth, while all the rest were teaching falsehoods. So they'd say that out of all the religions back then they were the closest to the truth, and that Jesus decided to use them and would in turn refine them. They would say that you are saying that they must already have been teaching 100% truth to be chosen by the Lord, but that is not really reasonable. Much like a landlord returning to a rather shoddy building he hadn't seen for ages....and deciding he'd keep it but renovate it.
Unfortunately it looks like the house is in now occupied for even faultier tenants than 90 years ago. There's not been much evidence of any redecorating or renovating, if we are to judge true religion by it's 'fruits'.

the ONLY religion teaching the truth about the human soul, the trinity, hellfire, future paradise earth, while all the rest were teaching falsehoods.
Which is a lie too, because there were many groups with these teachings. They had a common decent so to speak: all were off shoots from Miller's movement. They were, and are, not much different from other Adventist groups.

JWs' teachings about this period of their history are extraoridinarily muddled. How they can reconcile their conviction that Jesus chose them because of the quality of the spiritual food they were dispensing at His return to their claim that they were prefigured by the ``two witnesses" of Revelation 11 and that the work was stopped and their officials thrown into jail because of their ``soiled garments" and God's displeasure, is beyond me. A classic example of cognitive dissonance in action.
And while we're on the subject of this most fascinating perid of WT history, it's interesting to note that Rutherford and his gang agreed to excise the offending pages of The Finished Mystery that got them into thrown in to jail in the first place; hardly an uncompromising stand!
By the way, it was their belife at the time that those ``two witnesses" of Revelation 11 were the Old and New Testaments!
