    G?day all,

So how?s your weekend going? Downunder it?s mid-summer and we?re enjoying hot weather when it?s good to spend time outdoors at BBQs or the beach.

Unfortunately bushfires to the north of Sydney have been quite serious these past few days but happily the Bush Fire brigades have it under control.

So, what shall we reminisce about this weekend?

    How about this one:

What did you do when the convention was scheduled during your vacation?
    1. Gave up my vacation. (I was so obedient!)
    2. Didn?t go to the convention.
    3. Went to the opening talk then went on vacation. (after hearing the opening chairman?s talk that simply tells everyone what they can?t do, anyone would leave!!!)

    4. Went on vacation and came back for the concluding talk. (now that?s sophisticated!)

    5. Said I was going to the convention but went on vacation instead.

    6. Asked the elders why on earth did the society do that, are they stupid?

    7. I DA?d to save myself the trouble.

    8. Other (please detail)

Oh well, there?s bound to be more, so just add.

We?re looking forward to reading your thoughts as you go down Memory Lane.

    Enjoy.

    Cheers, Ozzie

I always had enough vacation time and notice to avoid this problem. But I know of others who had challenges.

Some businesses/companies required vacations to be selected by December 31. That was hard when it was not officially announced by the WTS until January. I have seen some JWs try and get the info unofficially through the CO or contactng another brother involved in the local planning. Sometimes they would tell, sometimes not. I have seen JWs pick several 3-day weekends off and hope that a DC nearby would fall on one of those.

Otherwise, find out in January, block that time out, and then plan your vacation. I found it harder to plan around the CO's visit since he flexed that more easily. I can remember once trying to plan a ski weekend and the PO didn't know when the CO was coming. So we picked a weekend and lo and behold it was the weekend he was coming. We went skiing and went to another congregation during their CO visit.

Unless you are an elder (and his family), things can be flexible. Elders/MS tend to have assignments and talks so it is hard to go to a different one without being missed/noticed.

Another issue is only getting one week of vacation and having to incorporate that with the DC. I never had the problem (always had 2 weeks or more). Growing up I attended few assemblies because my non-JW father would not spend the money on it. I envied the other JW kids who got to go and socialize with JW kids from other congregations.

Ozzie, what's with these different colors? I thought you ran out of black ink there for a moment!

Why do you want to bring me down to memory lane when I want to forget?

OK to your question; any excuse to get of the house was good for me, really! You asked, didn't you?

I always took my vacation and went to the assemblies, even my honeymoon was at an assembly in Florida.

Usually the convention WAS our vacation.

Sad, but true. My family could have been the "poster-family" for how to attend a district convention. My parents followed every instruction to the detail. But, we always went a day early and stayed a day late to have a little bit of fun. That was pretty cool.

    You bastard!

It's cold, rainy, and windy up above

Can I put up a little trailor next to your home during the winter months the US has, if I promise to leave when the weather gets nice here again?

I ALWAYS went to the convention no matter what. Sometimes it WAS our vacation....other times we could do both.

We always had 6 or 7 months notice for District Conventions, so it was never an issue. There were a few times we learned that we were to have the CO or a CA when we were scheduled to be in Hawaii, so like anyone else who had spent a great deal of money for reservations, we went to Hawaii, and missed the "blessed visits".

We could always go to another CA or visit another cong., for the "very special" talks of the CO.

I'm with a number of other posters here.....the convention usually WAS our vacation. How lame

Now that I'm out - I take REAL vacations.......Disneyland, Mexico, trips to the Mountains........It's so great to actually LIVE now!
