As some of you know i had rotater surgery on my shoulder in oct. My insurance would only cover a few weeks of therapy.I do many of the excercise's at home but my arm is stuck. It will only go up half way and if i don't get it unstuck my doc. is going to put me in the hospital and as he said, put me out and crank on it. I hate hospitals and would appreciate any help or suggestions to unstick it. KLS

I'm certainly not a doctor, but I have suffered from Fibromyalgia for almost ten years. Sometimes I would be doing just simple tasks, and my shoulder joint, or elbow, knee or wrist, or neck, would freeze. (The worse event is the back spasms) Once I was taking a shower, and one minute I had raised my hands to my head and applied shampoo, when I took my arms down and then tried to rinse out the soap, I was immobile. I absolutely could not get my arms back up to my head.
When this happened the first time, I had no clue what was going on. I managed to get down on hands and knees and let the water from the shower get the soap out of my hair. Then I just sat there for awhile, letting the water hit my shoulders. Gradually, the severe pain subsided and I got out of the tub. Still I was not right by a long shot.
Muscles can go into spasms, and they can become rigid and painful. With Fibromyalgia it is pain along with feeling like the "tin man" on Oz. My joints just won't move. I have learned techniques for coping with severe pain and immobility. Don't fight it. Relax as best you can. Breathe in and breathe out, take some muscle relaxers, or a pain pill. I opted to stay away from the stronger prescription pain medications, and usually, it will subside to a tolerable point if I take two to four Advil as soon as the event occurs.
There is a catch-22 in such circumstances because you are immobile and most times in pain, but you really do need to exercise and keep the joint moving as much as possible. I began exercising last year, because I saw myself becoming nearly an invalid. The first couple of weeks was the worse, but now, I know that the regular routine of exercise has helped me immensely.
I hope you can get some relief soon!

kls,
A frozen shoulder from adhesion formation is reasonably common, after surgery or injury. I know other people who have had it rotated under anesthesia to break the adhesions. Their main problem was forcing themselves to keep it moving, after that, to prevent the shoulder form gluing itself down again. Have a look at this site:

Several years back I fell off a ladder and the doc determined that I had a torn totator cuff. The pain was intense. I could not move the shoulder without that awful pain. The doc said that to keep it from locking up completely I had to do the exercises. I forced myself to do the exercises even though I wanted to scream with the pain. Gradually the movement was less and less painful.
I would not wish such pain on anyone. Hang in there, it will get better. ((((((KLS)))))))
