Ok, did the CO's and DO's. Ready for a round for the elders? Who was your favorite and most loved shepherd of the flock? Who was your most notorious member of the Theocratic Police?
I have several favorites. Frank Skwarlo, Fort Valley Georgia, already old when I met him in 74. Special pioneer with his wife Norma. He got a kick out of talking the kids into playing in the mud and sometimes trying to trip his wife in the kingdom hall. She would laugh it off when he did. They lived a very simple life and were genuinely happy. They were of the annointed and I really have no doubt they actually were TRUE CHRISTIANS in spite of a life in the empire. (not a star trek fan so I don't use the borg, star wars fan here, I prefer the empire)
My Uncle Oliver. Otis Oliver Reagan (distant cousin of the great Ronald Reagan) the most cantankerous, ornery, aggravator you'll ever meet. Drove at 40 mph on interstate 75. Everyone in our little town knew him (and his driving!) When a female householder answered the door he'd always call her "lady". Being a lifelong batchelor but still looking at 70-something when a sweet thing of 16 or 17 or so was around he'd get all flustered. Even in his 80's he was holding out for a 16 year old bride (yes in Georgia, 16 is legal to marry)
Sadly now he has alzheimer's but on the bright side he was recently kicked out of a nursing home for "entertaining" female residents in his room. (I love "unk" as we called him!!)
Least favorites:
Dan Mason. THE theocratic policeman. "The Enforcer". Went gunning for prominent elders kids. I was one (duh!) Modus Operandi: make friends, gain confidence, be a pal, find out what they like to do when not in service/at meetings, add lots of innuendo, make stuff up, interrogate their friends, slander you to your friends, and for a finishing touch make semi-subtle comments about you-not in a nice way-any chance you get when giving local needs talks whether the comments are true and have anything to do with the talk or not.
Everyone in the congregation already knew I liked cars, suddenly it became a bad thing to discuss automotive topics in field service (mentioned from the platform of course) or read hot rod magazine (again, mentioned from the platform). As a side note, it was funny to see the look on his face when I mentioned in one of my weekly meetings with the elders that his son had practically begged me for the swimsuit issue of hot rod which of course I had discarded so as not to stumble anyone, which of course caused me to miss a really good article on fuel injection-not to mention the lovely and barely dressed young lady draped across the hood of the fuel injected vehicle in question. But I digress.
Runner-up:
James Kelly, or Kelley. I'd swear he was a fag. Sorry to offend by that word but any gay person will back me up on this. His demeanor, the way he talked and carried himself. Not a flaming faggot, more like homo inferno. If Dan Mason was The Enforcer, James Kelly was-or thought he was-some equivalent of the cigarette smoking man on the X files. Power beyond mortal dubs. He could disfellowship you with out a comittee. Moved to our congregation and rocketed to PO immediately thanks to Antrim Smith (see post about co's)
I'd love to run into him in a private setting someday.
Ok, enough of my rantings.
Let's hear what y'all have.
Mike.
