no agenda here... just posting it as I'm sure many of us will hear about it from our relatives... Evidence Suggests Possible VCJD Transfer Via Blood Reuters

    By Patricia Reaney

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists reported new evidence on Friday which increased the likelihood that the human form of mad cow disease could be spread through a blood transfusion.

Britain announced last December what it said could be the world's first case of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease ( news - web sites ) (vCJD) caused by transfusion, following the death of an unidentified patient several years after receiving blood from a donor later found to have had the illness.

British Health Secretary John Reid said at the time it was not certain whether the patient had been infected through the transfusion or by eating meat infected with mad cow disease.

But two studies published in The Lancet medical journal show infection through blood is a possible route of transmission.

"Our findings raise the possibility that this infection was transfusion-transmitted," said Professor Robert Will, of the National CJD Surveillance Unit at Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Variant CJD is the human equivalent of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE ( news - web sites)) or mad cow disease, an incurable, degenerative brain disorder linked to eating meat infected with BSE. The illnesses are caused by normal brain proteins, called prions, that transform themselves into infectious agents.

After studying blood donation records and the details of the case, Will and his team said the patient was much older than most vCJD sufferers and the odds of it not being through a transfusion were about one in 15,000-30,000.

In a separate study in the journal, scientists at the department of medical research at the French Atomic Energy Commission in France found that the macaque monkey can be infected with BSE orally or intravenously.

Based on their findings, they said blood transfusion should be regarded as a "likely route of contamination for vCJD patients with a medical history involving a transfusion during the period of risk."

The recipient of the transfusion developed vCJD after a 6.5 year incubation period. The donor showed no signs of the disease when the blood was given to Britain's National Blood Service but developed the illness and died from it three years later.

Professor Adriano Aguzzi, a leading expert on prion diseases at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, said the findings are not surprising because studies in sheep have shown that the infectious agent can be transmitted via blood, even if the blood is collected before symptoms of the illness are evident.

"Shocking as it may be, the finding that vCJD can be transmitted via blood transfusion is not surprising," he said in a commentary on the research.

Up to December 2003, 153 cases of vCJD had been reported worldwide.

Blood Transfusions aren't given casually. I've never been JW, but I would only accept one if it significantly improved my chance at survival.

So, I balance, extremely remote chance of getting a nasty disease vs.almost certain death. I'll take my chances and live.

Why, Phant? I'm not planning on getting a transfusion from a cow at ANY time in the future, yanno....

Hello there, a very important note here...NO human being has ever had 'mad cow disease' This is vital to understand.

People can have CJD and NVCJD, BSE is 'mad cow disease' the B stands for bovine, OSC is a SIMILAR disease in sheep and so on. They are not the same disease just similar.

Humans could have CJD then there was a new variant hence NVCJD. The new variant human disease of a previously known human disease.I believe CJD was first found in cannibals who ate human brains.

It is known and has been known for a very long time that the human form can be transmitted from human to human by blood products, growth hormones (human), other human tissue. It cannot be sterilised out of blood products and the blood suppliers have had enough of a problem with other blood transmitted diseases.

I firmly believe that cattle are being 'blamed' for a human to human disease because if most people realised that CJD and NVCJD CANNOT be sterilised off surgical instruments there would be uproar.

A further note to panic the public... most cattle with BSE are dairy cattle, and as this disease cannot be sterilised out either, would you want to drink milk and give it to babies?

It may be that the bovine disease mutates to form CJD or NVCJD, but as yet that has not been shown let alone proved.

If anyone has any queries they can message me and I'll do my best to provide info.

My younger son had his tonsils out a few years ago and I was more concerned about his being operated on with 'second hand' instruments than anything else as this is a way CJD and NVCJD may be passed especially with throat or brain surgery.

I understand quite a number of hospitals now use disposable instruments for this very reason. No cows involved.

Some people who have had NVCJD have been vegetarians, very few vets or farmers have had it.

It could even be that it started through vaccinations that used human blood products, and been transmitted down the human line.

I would have a blood transfusion again if my life depended on it (If they got my blood group right!) I have annual vaccinations,I drink milk and I eat beef. I let my kids have all these things too.But I am very concerned about surgical instuments.

Can I get off my soap box now? Thanks for letting me rant...must get that bee out of my bonnet!

oh yeah we have a beef farm....

JW: "See, we are right about blood! You can even get Mad Cow Disease from it now!!!!!!!"

Me: "Well you'd better tell your Jehovahs Witness friends about it - the ones who are happily having blood component injections which take pints and pints of human blood to make.....and maybe you'll all think about it when you're signing your medical release forms and ticking all the boxes of bits of blood you can have, and the bits they say you can't. Hypocrite!"

shit -- the witnesses will really love this -- see our wonderful society was right all along --it is best to not have a blood transfusion

Re: mad cow transmitted through transfusion- - - would that be the whole cow or just the disease? Had known that an entire cow could be transmitted I would definitely have remained in the borg. Surely it is a sign of Jehovah's blessing when he protects his people from having a cow transmitted in to their bloodstream.

mad cow transmitted through transfusion- - - would that be the whole cow or just the disease?

That would tend to tick a cow off, trying to force it through a tiny IV catheter.

But seriously, just trying to add a little levity to this worrisome idea.
