Some Rules:
Whether we like it or not, newspapers are businesses - and they do think of sales and circulation. Therefore, there is a few facts to be considered:
1) - Headlines
A newspaper need headlines. Like it or not, but a story which isn't good enough to make headlines, isn't much interesting. The bigger headlines it's possible to make of a case - the better.
2) - What is interesting
This is depending on WHAT newspaper, magazine, radio- or TV station. For a National Newspaper, you need a "BIg" case. Something that is a real scandal, or real news. Local papers will be more interested in things happening in the area, and it's more easy to get them to print a story.
But - in both cases they are running a business - and the story needs to be good - interesting, horrifying, disgusting - anything that do SELL in your area.
3 - Someone to "hang" the story on
Normally it's best if someone can front the story with a name and a face. Why?
a) If someone fronts a story with their name and face, the story itself is more easy for the readers to believe.
b) We're all sceptical to persons shooting from the shadow of anonymity (like You Know here on this site and others). The credability isn't good being anonymous - unless it's a pretty good reason for being anonymous.
4 - Acceptable reasons for being anonymous
It's ALWAYS negative, and always bigger chanse the story will not be printed if nobody dares front the story. But, if you want to be anonymous, there is a few "good" reasons for doing so:
a: CASES OF CHILD ABUSE
If the reason is to protect the identity of a small child being abused, there is a valid reason.
b: TERROR
If the fact that the identified person will actually endanger his/her life, or will get serious trouble by a psychopat visiting, calling and harassing them, it is a reason as well.
But - try to find someone to front the story anyhow! If you can't - maybe a friend can. It's always the best to have someones face in an article.
5 - Proven Facts!
If a story is a bit tough, it's neccesary to be able to actually PROVE the case. No paper want to be sued because of printing false storys, and evidence is Alfa and Omega.
Also, the presentation is crucial. Some papers like a story to be a bit shocking - others do have a more conservative approach. Try to "speak the language" of the Paper.
MAIN RULE
IF YOU DO HAVE A GOOD CASE - MEDIA WILL PUBLISH IT!
I'm a journalist myself, and I do know how hard it can be to get the paper to actually do something with a story. The best is if the paper itself writes the story, but you can send readers letters as well.
