I was driving in my car this morning, listening to the radio and I heard a song that I remember hearing when I was younger. This song really bothered me when I heard it back then. It made me mad that someone would say these things about God.....When I heard it today, Although I liked to believe in a god, I actually agreed in many ways with the lyrics describing the Biblical God. Just thought it was kinda funny how thoughts change as you grow older. Of course, living without a cults constant influence helps too.

    "Dear God" by XTC

    Dear god,
    Hope you got the letter,
And I pray you can make it better down here.
I don?t mean a big reduction in the price of beer,
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet,
?cause they don?t get enough to eat

    From god,
    I can?t believe in you.

    Dear god,
    Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
?cause they can?t make opinions meet,
    About god,
    I can?t believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
    And the devil too!

    Dear god,
    Don?t know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it ain?t and so do you,
    Dear god,
    I can?t believe in,
    I don?t believe in,

I won?t believe in heaven and hell.
    No saints, no sinners,
    No devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You?re always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And it?s the same the whole world ?round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
That the father, son and holy ghost,
    Is just somebody?s unholy hoax,
And if you?re up there you?ll perceive,
That my heart?s here upon my sleeve.
If there?s one thing I don?t believe in...

    It?s you,
    Dear god.

Actually, atheism, or abandoning beliefs in a god-out-there, can be a wise and positive step. Unfortunately, we easily get re-stuck in our new beliefs in our non-beliefs and investigate no further.

I posted that a few monthes back. Good song. Do you remember the same group's song Peter Pumkin Head? Kind of an interesting take on the whole Jesus thing.

I agree with you James, that if we stop at any one belief, we can stop growing.

Just to let you know that I myself had copied those very same lyrics on a sheet of paper a little over a year ago (December 3,2002 - to be exact) and stuck it in my Bible.

Yes, I remember when I was in junior high school in Los Angeles when that song by XTC came out. It always left an impression in me, but I never let it surfaced....until December 3,2002. That day I attempted suicide. As you can tell, I didn't succeed. I'm kind of glad that I didn't.

Each day I'm being educated. I just need to get in touch with reality. I just wonder if "God" is anything but real. If so, I just wish HE/SHE would do something to relieve all humans of their suffering and turmoil.

John Lennon sung this line in one of his songs; "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

I'm letting myself make my life without the plans of the WT organization.

Alligator Wisdom, are you saying that the lyrics to this song were your suicide note?

    Nilfun asked:

"Alligator Wisdom, are you saying that the lyrics to this song were your suicide note?"

Yes. It basically was. I wrote nothing else but those lyrics of that song and left it on a sheet a paper and stuck it in my "Large Print Reference New World Translation Bible". Even though I haven't heard it for years, those words ironically came to heart just about word for word that morning.

My wife found the Bible lying oddly on the coffee table with a piece of paper sticking out. She then desperately searched for me. She discovered me in the bathroom lying in my vomit. She called for medical assistance. And here I am.......doing the fade.

One of the credos I live by.

    I didn't succeed. I'm kind of glad that I didn't.

Sometimes we get so busy trying to figure out why we're "here" and the "purpose for life", that we sorrowfully neglect to "live our precious life". We are like in this holding pattern--waiting, wondering, so unsettled and unhappy. Eventually that crushes us and compounds anxiety, until we are forced to be different.

This realization of "loss of cognitive belief structure" is truly sad and can be emotionally crushing--and that is what caused me to finally get off that merry-go-round.
