I have never been a jw, but I have read many versions of the bible, though not the NWT. Anyway, whenever I read / hear passages from it on this site, the language grates on me and I think to myself, "Something's wrong here - this can't be right".
I just read this on another thread, and yes, it grated.
"And this is what love means, that we go on walking according to his commandments. This is the commandment, just as you people have heard from the beginning thatyou should go on walking in it
Other versions mention following or walking in the sense of 'how we walk', but
I'm sure that I haven't read the "go on walking" phrase in any other bible, but for jws it's appears there is an underlying message - i.e. love = keep walking.
Do you think that this is how people sumbliminally recieve the message as jws ?
Actually it's not always subliminal -- sometimes they even BOAST about the way they translate these Greek verbs. They claim it renders the passages with more accuracy.
Example -- normal Bible: "Ask and you shall receive"; NWT: "Keep on asking, and you shall receive".
Normal Bible: "Have faith"; NWT: "Exercise faith".
Their explanation is that Christianity is a continual activity, and that these Greek expressions originally meant that. I don't know Greek, it's all Greek to me!
I guess it was a method Fred Franz used to try to "distinguish" the JW's from the lesser class of the world.
Their "excersise faith" thing is an attempt to say works = faith therefore works cause salvation. The problem is at Romans 10: 9-11 their translation rules require that they say "in the heart one exercises faith."
