  Numbering of the Presidents

  You may have noticed that the numbering of the Presidents on this site differs slightly from other sources. The reason is because of the two non-consecutive terms that Grover Cleveland served in the late 19th century. When Cleveland began his first term in office he was the 22nd person to hold the office. When Cleveland was defeated by Benjamin Harrison in the next election, Harrison became the 23rd President.
  
  When Cleveland defeated Harrison in the next election and took office for his second term, there still had only been 23 individuals since George Washington to hold the office of President, Cleveland being the 22nd. However, because of Cleveland's non-consecutive terms some sources call him the 22nd and 24th President. This causes the numbering on Presidentsusa.net to differ by one for every President after Cleveland. However, even though George Washington served two terms no one calls him the 1st and 2nd President. The fact that Cleveland's terms were not consecutive is irrelevant.
  
  Because of these facts, Presidentsusa.net describes the current President George W. Bush as the 42nd President of the United States. Many sources refer to him as the 43rd President, even though there have only been 42 individuals that have served as President.

  Ford was not a real President. Presidents are elected, Ford fell into the position from appointment. He was never elected to anything in that chain. Had he been Speaker of the House and both Pres. and Vice Pres. been killed then he would have at least came from an elected poisition but Ford did not. He was only filling the office until a President could be elected. Therefore Bush is the 41st real president. What you are forgetting though is that Bush is a Moron and not very popular. The Wild Beast is much more likely to be someone like Tom Hanks. You know, the kind of guy you would be happy to let give your teenage daughter a bath, right after he checked your prostate.

  ....if you want to get technical, every 20 years when a president got shot or died, and the VP took over, the VP wasn't president because he wasn't elected. he just continued the term for the president that died. so TECHNICALLY they aren't presidents either because they weren't elected. wanna get more technical freddy franz reincarnate??

  oh oh oh, and leolaia is right. the united states was born when the Declaration of Independence was written, not when the US Constitution was written. All that the transition between the articles and constitution was, was a restructuring of government. the US was always called the US............

  You are wrong. The VP is elected to the position of VP. Along with that comes the approval of the electorate for him becoming president should the president die or fall ill. In the case of Ford he was not elected to VP wheras LB Johnson for instance was elected to VP.

  FirstInLine: The VP is on the presidential ballot. the VP isn't elected, but selected by the President. you vote for Clinton/Gore or Bush/Cheney, not Clinton/Cheney....
