Very interesting.......
I heard this today on talk radio.... you're right... very interesting.
I thought it depicted the Romans as much more brutal than the Jews. Has anyone been calling the Passion anti-Roman?
I concur. With the exception of the Jewish Priests, the Romans were the only ones depicted as savages in The Passion of The Christ. Now there were some anti-semetic comments made by Pilates' character -- but he probably actually felt that way. (As most Roman Consuls probably felt superior to the people they were sent to control.)
There's one scene in particular in the movie, when Simon of Cyrene is helping Jesus carry his cross and Simon comes to the defense of Jesus, after which a Roman soldier insults Simon by cursing at him that he's a Jew. I found that scene to be the complete opposite of anti-semitism.
I'd encourage everyone to go see this movie, well every adult. I don't think it's fit for kids -- far too violent. I've seen it four times and may see it again. It's simply a heart-wrenching drama -- particularly the scenes with Mary and her suffering at the torture and death of her son.
Okay, I saw it today. Anti-seminism is NOT a view I'd come away with at all. In fact, the Romans were the true brualizers.
Beyond that, it was an artistic move...beautiful in places; boring in others. I would definately NOT take children or people who like action/adventure movies (my husband). I saw it alone, and because of my JW upbringing I wanted to experience it. I certainly DID NOT get any religious feeling from it (for god's sake, how many people have endured horrendous torture for defending their country, or, worse yet, for no reason at all.) I wasn't converted; I had NO ill feeling for Jews, or Romans (italians) for that matter. It was a great, artistic movie. And I cannot fathom the supposed controversy it ired. But then again, I guess I knew that before I ever saw it.
