There is a scripture, I think in Acts, that specifically says not to go from door to door. I wanted to compare the greek words used there to the ones in other parts of acts that probably should be written "in private homes" that they use to "validify" the preaching work.

I can't for the life of me find where I wrote that scripture down at though... anyone know it off hand?

    Is this the one:

    Luke 10:1-16

"So stay in that house, eating and drinking the things they provide, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not be transferring from house to house."

There is an excellent dissertation on this topic in Chapter 7 of "In Search of Chrisian Freedom" by Ray Franz. To anyone reading this post: if you don't have this book, do both yourself, and Ray Franz, a favour and buy it.

The scripture would be in Luke 10:7 where Jesus says:

"So stay in that house, eating and drinking the things they provide, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not be transferring from house to house." Another translation says "Do not be going from house to house."

"In fact, to this course you were called, because even the Christ suffered for you, leaving you a model for you to follow in his footsteps closely." (1 Peter 2:21)

Did he go door to door?

"Shortly afterwards he went journeying from CITY TO CITY and from VILLAGE TO VILLAGE, preaching and declaring the good news of the kingdom of God, and the twelve were with him." (Luke 8:1)

When did he go to a home?

"Now a certain one of the Pharisees KEPT ASKING him to dine with him. Accordingly he ENTERED INTO THE HOUSE of the Pharisee and reclined at the table." (Luke 7:36)

"While he was yet speaking, a certain one of the presiding officer of the synagogue came, saying, "Your daughter has died; do not bother the teacher any longer." On hearing this Jesus answered him, "Have no fear, only put forth faith, and she will be saved." When he REACHED THE HOUSE he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter and John and James and the girl's father and mother." (Luke 8:49-51)

"When he had spoken this, a Pharisee requested him to dine with him . So he WENT IN and reclined at the table." (Luke 11:37)

"Now as they were going their way, he entered into a certain village. Here a certain woman named Martha received him as guest INTO THE HOUSE." (Luke 10:38)

"Now there was a man called by the name Zacchaeus; and he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. Well, he was seeking to see who this Jesus was, but he could not for the crowd, because he was small in size...Now when Jesus got to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and get down, for today I MUST STAY IN YOUR HOUSE." With that he hurried and got down with rejoicing and received him as guest. But when they saw it, they all fell to muttering, saying: "With a man that is a sinner he went in to lodge." (Luke 19:2-7)

"Accordingly Jesus, six days before the Passover, arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus was whom Jesus had raised up from the dead. Therefore they spread an EVENING MEAL for him there, and Martha was ministering, but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him." (John 12:1, 2)

Jesus went from city to city and village to village. The only reason Jesus went to homes was because HE WAS INVITED as guest to dine with many people. In the same way, when Jesus gave the instructions to his disciples because they too would get invited to homes, he said to them, "Into whatever city or village you enter, search out who in it is deserving, and stay there until you leave. When you are entering into a house, greet the household." (Matthew 10:11, 12) He gave these instructions so that when they were invited, they would know what to do. They didn't go "door to door," they went city to city. Those who invited them in, they stayed at THOSE houses. But they were not to go "house to house."

Those who are anointed do the same today. They go from city to city, village to village, and when ones invite them in to stay, they go and stay.

    From the NWT Reference Bible

*** Rbi8 Acts 20:20 *** 20 while I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house.

*** Acts 20:20 (ftn) *** Or, ?and in private houses.? Lit., ?and according to houses.? Gr., kai kat´

*** Rbi8 Acts 2:46 *** 46 And day after day they were in constant attendance at the temple with one accord, and they took their meals in private homes and partook of food with great rejoicing and sincerity of heart

*** Acts 2:46 (ftn) *** Or, ?from house to house.? Gr., kat´ oi'kon.

*** Rbi8 Acts 5:42 *** 42 And every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.

*** Acts 5:42 (ftn) *** Lit., ?according to house.? Gr., kat´ oi'kon. Here ka·ta' is used with the accusative sing. in the distributive sense. R. C. H. Lenski, in his work The Interpretation of The Acts of the Apostles, Minneapolis (1961), made the following comment on Ac 5:42: ?Never for a moment did the apostles cease their blessed work. ?Every day? they continued, and this openly ?in the Temple? where the Sanhedrin and the Temple police could see and hear them, and, of course, also kat ' oÎkon , which is distributive, ?from house to house,? and not merely adverbial, ?at home.? ?
