My neighbour just came over and showed me her Bell Canada bill. She had 500$ worth of long distance phone calls made last month, that she didn't make. They were all made to Spain.

She phoned Bell Canada and they said it was probably done by someone on the internet.

    How can that happen?

How can she protect herself from that happening again?

Move to Spain so the calls aren't long distance.

There was an article in our local paper last month, where the telephone company took a couple to small claims court over non payment of long distance.

Apparently they still had a dial up connection, and were on a site that loaded a virus on their PC that would secretly call one of those south sea numbers or a 1 900 number, and just stay connected.

They lost, as they had no virus protection. They promptly signed up for a cable modem.

What happens is dodgy sites can put a new dialler on PCs.

This reminds me of that really old computer virus that would dial 9-1-1 out of the modem

Sounds like something WorldCom, now MCI would do. Anyways with my unlimited plan, I call anyone at anywhere at anytime.
