You need to realise which is the more sensible move, and be bright enough to make that move.

    HMMMMM......

not sure i get the full drift of yer question....is it if saying one more thing (last word) enflames the conversation, what do I do to manage myself....

well, i've semi-conquered a bad habit of interrupting or one-upsmanship by physical self-awareness...watching my body language and monitoring for impulses and then a series of self-imposed monitoring reactions such as sometimes I will literally bite my tongue, lightly, to keep myself from interrupting or speaking something as the last word...or I'll have a pen/note paper in my bag to write down my reactions as opposed to speaking them. This is fantastic, because it provides fodder for another habit of mine, which is writing!

but as equally often I'll run ahead and speak me mind being the direct Sagittarian that I am.

    A "direct" Sagittarian?

And I always mince my words so carefully.

No wonder my wife calls me "the walking salt shaker" & tells me I pour myself into others' wounds.

I tend to blurt the most awful thing I can think of when I am upset. Since this is such a strong impulse for me, I like to get in my car and drive around, alone, until I am calmer. I have put a lot of mileage on my little car in the past year, from this habit.
