Now that I’ve left the Borg I’m making up my mind about many social issues and I can’t see why people have to be so polarized.
For example:
Abortion- I don’t think we should tell women what to do with their bodies (so I’m pro-choice there), but I think late term abortions where they just chop the head of a fully developed unborn baby are criminal. (so I’m with pro-lifers there).
Gun control- I agree with the right to bear arms for protection, sport, hunting, etc. (go NRA) but don’t see a problem with a ten day waiting period so a full background check can be performed and having people go through a course and get licensed and have child locks for safety (which the NRA is against).
The war. I hate what’s going on over in Iraq, think things might have been done differently, and I want us out of there as soon as possible, but I’m not blind to the fact that Saddam was a butcher, that gassed entire villages of Kurdish people within his own country and was not making things easier for inspectors and could not account for many weapons which he said had been destroyed but could not show proof. That he attempted to annex a neighboring country 10 years before etc. etc. etc..and something had to be done.
I guess, my observation is that it is quite hard to stay within a middle ground. Its easier to put a label on ourselves and call ourselves, for example, conservative or liberals and simply agree with everything they say. Even religion has a tendency to embrace only way of thinking and see everyone else’s as irrelevant. Does anyone agree we all need to be a little more open minded.
