Is there a JW Connection?

    A story out of Roanoke, Virginia tells of the murder of an 82 year old woman by her daughter. The daughter believed that the end of the world would be in the year 2000 at the millennium. An interesting comment was made by her brother: "Anyone that can condone someone murdering their mother--I don't judge them; that's up to Jehovah God. But I don't want nothing to do with them."

    Whether she has any connection with JWs is not mentioned, nor is the brother. But his use of the term "Jehovah God" makes me wonder if he, at least, is.

    Is there anybody out there in Virginia who might know?

    There are too many cults that differ in the name they give God. It is actually quite widely known that God is called Jehovah / Yahweh. Even in one of the Indiana Jones movies, Indiana uses "Jehovah" to get past some trap (he is given the hint "Utter God's name". As far as I know the WTBTS has never put forth any millenium predictions for the end of the world. My humble opinion is that it is not linked.

    As far as I know the WTBTS has never put forth any millenium predictions for the end of the world.

    They have made few references to that direction:

    "The apostle Paul was spearheading the Christian missionary activity. He was also laying a foundation for a work that would be completed in our 20th century." {WT Jan 1 1989 12} [bound volume changed "20th century" to "day"]

    ".. there are many indications that 'the end' is much closer than that [the turn of the century]" {WT Mar 1 1984 18-9}

    "Shortly, within our twentieth century, the 'battle in the day of Jehovah' will begin against the modern antitype of Jerusalem, Christendom." {TNSK 216}

    I know that many Adventist sects (Remember, CTR was a disfellowshipped Adventist) use the holy name almost as much or at times, even more than the JW's. Many of those Adventist sects also embraced the Y2K end of the world doctrine too.

    I would venture a guess that the son, Rex Dooley, is the only family member who is a JW. Based on his comments and where he sat, on the prosecutors side and the bulk of the family on the defendant's side. It is likely that the parents and the other siblings were not. Was this woman influenced by JW doctrine, maybe, but she seems to have a history of mental problems that might have made her latch onto the end being in 2000. It is a sad story all around. It was obvious to me that this woman should not have been taking care of her 82-year-old mother. I wonder why the other siblings don't seem to have been much help.

    It is hard to tell.
