Vancouver Island to UK Business Idea - Help Require / Info

    Hmmmmm another long shot question.

Right. Does anyone know where I can get a quotation for a full shipping container from Vancouver Island to the nearest UK container port preferably Cardiff in Wales, or do you have any idea how much this might be and how long a full container might take to cover that distance?

I understand that upon the shores of Vancouver Island you have millions of tons of driftwood coating your shorelines, many of these peices wonderfully sculptured by wind and salt water. Specifically, I would be seeking driftwood up to 6-8' in length, the more unusual the sculpturing by nature, the better, also of course to plug the gaps in the container load, many smaller specimens to fill the container itself chock a block.

Here in the UK there is a huge at present virtually untapped market for these peices and they fetch on average £4 - 600 each. I'm just wondering if it would be cost effective or not to import them here, i.e 12 containers or so per annum for starters. Of course all peices would have to be graded, sorted and pressure washed before entering UK waters.

In the garden design centres, these are a very much sought after commodity.

A long shot I believe, but hopefully someone here might come up with a solution, perhaps dispel the container as a mode of transportation, instead a partial or full ship bunker or hold.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Yours faithfully

    Mark

Containers land here, then are shipped via rail across the country. It may be cheaper, not sure, but in any case, these folks could certainly steer you the right way.

I can give you the phone #s of 6 container lines:

    Maersk Canada (902) 422-7331 *

Zim Israel Navigation Co (Canada) Ltd. (902) 422-7447 *

    Oceanex (1997) Inc (902) 429-9201

    Atlantic Bulk Carriers (902) 481-5966

Cantrax Container Services & Warehousing (902) 468-6368 e-mail [email protected]

    Hey Mark...

I'm taking a stab in the dark, here but here's some links I found on google under the search "vancouver island container shipping." I know NOTHING about this stuff but these may start you off. (If you want to look more, try using www.google.ca for first hits).

    http://www.rinkens.com/

(this one I think is specifically for their log homes but it's wood so might have some leads for you...)

    http://www.100-mile-house-log-homes.com/shipping_overseas.html

(this is on a container crane out of nanaimo on the east coast of the Island...)

    http://www.npa.ca/sumr00.pdf

(there's some links on this site for different container company websites - Seaspan is one I recognize)

    http://www.todaystrucking.com/displayarticle.cfm?ID=3092

You might want to check this first...it looks like a directory for ocean transport...and a subcategory for container sales and leasing.

    Hope it helps! :)

Why not fly over and we can gather up all this driftwood and make a raft using seaweed and snot to hold it all together. Then we'll sail it back through the Panama canal, oh what fun we'll have.

i swear WHEN will YOU people start speaking proper American English, eh??? is that duct tape yer referring to? sheesh?

instead of procuring a container all to yerself, why not investigate shipping lines as an alternative, many times they have extra space they're lookin to fill for a discount price.
