Is this more dry humour IronGland? How does he stack up, I want to know. I was raised JW, that's my only (very feeble) excuse for knowing sweet f.a. about history.

Buchanan was a part of the comp. of 1850. He avoided the civil war early. The Bad: Slavery Continued. The Good: The South might have won at that point. Buchanan is also rumored to be our first gay president, according to historian James Loewen. Final Score (American Football Style): Buchanan 30, Bush 12.

Fillmore was the embodiment of the placeholder, replacing another elected president (Zach Taylor) and did little of import, aside from approving more westward settlement. But no real Crises to test him. I don't give free rides, though...respect is earned, not assumed. Bush 17, Fillmore 10.

(Side note: before Teddy Roosevelt, few presidents -- Lincoln and Jackson being noteable exceptions -- were proactive and did little to steer National Policy. The Executive Branch didn't become powerful in people's lives until the 20th Century. Just this Teacher's observation)

Harding was like Dubya, only dumber and with more corrupt, less intelligent friends. He died in office after hearing that one of the Justice Department appointees -- the Sheriff from his hometown -- and his pals were ripping of the WWI Verterans benefits. Teapot Dome, Over the top Lazzei Faire that set the pins up for the 1929 Crash, mistress stories that make Clinton look like St. Francis Assisi...Our Worst President, by far. Bush 28, Harding 3.

Hoover rolled snakeyes on the whole Roaring 20's let-business-ride bender. The Crash hit mere months before he took office, nearly called by Hoover's predecessor (Coolidge said he would not seek the '28 election, with is wife saying, "[Coolidge] thinks a depression is coming."). However, Hoover did nothing to help. It took 3 years of a ridiculous unemployment rate (topping at 30% when FDR finally took the oath) to convice America that John Maynard Keyes' ideas about government procativity in the economy just might be needed. Hoover fiddled while Rome burned, and refused to hear the other side. Close one, but Bush 13, Hoover 10

How does Bush stack up against these presidents?

I'd have to see them stacked naked in a pyramid to really answer that.
