Jehovah's Witnesses facing problems with building religious centre in Slovenia Ljubljana, 3 June: Following the controversy surrounding the mosque construction in Ljubljana, another religious community is facing problems in building their centre, as the residents of a village north of Ljubljana have been protesting fervently against the Jehovah's Witnesses having their centre there.

The villagers of Duplica pri Kamniku took to the street earlier this week to prevent the launch of construction works, claiming that the centre will deprive them of parking space. The police was called to intervene on Monday [31 May] evening, with one resident taken to hospital after a brush with the police.

The residents also filed a petition with the Kamnik local court to suspend the construction, however the court dismissed it as ungrounded. The residents are meanwhile still awaiting a response to their complaint sent to the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.

A dispute over the construction of the centre has been going on for some time. While the Jehovah community has all the necessary papers for the construction of an educational centre, they still need to get the go-ahead on religious activities.

As Marko Sustersic of the Jehovah's Witnesses told the daily Dnevnik, they are the victims of the dispute: when purchasing the premises, they were promised that they would be able to conduct their activities in peace.

This is a big story currently in Slovenia, with JW's all over the media...They are trying to build a new branch office with 50 residential rooms for bethel workers. This new object will cost about 2 millions of euros, which is a lot for just under 2000 JW's in our country. They have chosen a very strange location for this object, in the centre of residential area, with school and kindergarden nearby.

Assumption # 1. If they have to pay taxes ( and they probably don't ) they would be less, in that neighbourhood, then on commercial or institutional land.

Assumption # 2 Less likely to be the target of terrorism, nestled in amongst homes and schools.
