    Hey all,

Yesterday while mountain biking I came down a trail way too fast, slid, slipt and slided of a cliff and flew like a winged monkey from the wizard of oz into a patch of poison oak. Both my forearms are covered from wrist to elbow with the stuff. I was wondering if you knew of any cures, besides the calamine lotion. I don't want pink forearms for godsake!

    thanks,

    an itchy SD

Tecnu. It works great especialy if you know you've been exposed, but use it before the rash appears. Then you don't get poison oak. If you use it after you have the rash it gets the oil out so it does'nt spread, and it dries out the rash. You can get it at almost any drug sture.

The irony? It was invented by a dub. Nice guy, tho', I grew up in his cong.

My son has had very serious cases of poison oak almost annually, missing school sometimes for two weeks as he has been so swollen and monster like from head to toe. Tried everything over the years and his best testimonial goes to a pure aloe vera gel applied directly to the affected areas - it still has to run it's course, but this offered much relief and good healing/no scarring.

Don't forget to clean your bike - and all your cycling clothes, gloves, helmet and shoes especially - to remove any oils. We usually use Simple Green, or, if you get the tecnu, you can use that.

Our thoughts are with you as you try not to scratch

I went to my local walgreens and there was the stuff Valis recommend, didn't see any others. It is called Zanfel. It is supposed to completely remove all the oil, even after you are infected. And so far it works great, no itching at all and the swelling is already going down after only .5 hour. The catch if any was this stuff cost me $40 for a 1oz tube.

    Thanks for all the advice.

During a backyard wedding in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, I encountered Poison Oak for the first time.

I took off my sandals, walked around my friend's parent's huge yard. I walked through this stuff 'poison oak'. Poison ivy, I know what that looks like, but poison oak, I was unfamiliar with.

Lordy! Lordy! My two feet and ankles were completely blistered like you wouldn't believe. ITCHY! I could have scratched clear to the bone.

Yes, Calomine lotion did help, but I had some Webbers Vitamin E cream, that helped almost immediately.

It's not pleasant, and well...it takes ages for it to disappear. Just be glad you weren't sitting on the stuff or sunbathing nude near the stuff.

Hope whatever you use, irradicates the itching and blistering.

Looks like everyone has given you some great suggestions. Some of those ointment/medications I haven't ever heard of, so this is good to know for my next visit to the wilds of southern Ontario.

I used pure bleach burns like hell but dries it up. Iodine Indian soap good luck. to sooth yourself half box of oat meal in a tub of hot water after the strach is released cool the water off then take a bath. then dry off and blerach your self.

I got a case of something similar a couple of years ago. I tried all the common suggestions but after 4 days both my forearms were so bad I went to the doctor. I had a 16 day diminishing course of steroids and it cleared up very quickly. I had a similar reaction again this year but to a lesser degree and I treated it with calomine lotion. I always wear gloves when gardening and (now learned a lesson) long sleeves if I'm bagging piles of weeds.
