In the April edition of ex-JW Peter Barnes newletter, "Out of Darkness", I found the following statement: "In recent years, the Society has dropped the term "Governing Body", but in practice it is still operating." I was shocked to read this. I had not heard anything about it. I wrote to him asking for clarification, but received no answer. Have any of you heard anything about the term "Governing Body" being dropped? If so, how did you learn of this? In the Society's literature? If this term has been dropped, how is the GB referred to nowadays?
No more "Governing Body"?

I think that Barnes is confused.
A couple of years ago, they made an organizational change so that the Governing Body no longer served as the directors of the corporations. But the Governing Body is still in charge, and was definitely mentioned in the publications at least as recently as I left (which was last year).

Euphenism, thank you for the information that the WTS literature still referred to the GB as the "Governing Body" last year. Please, would you be able to quote me a sentence from a piece of WTS literature from last year (or more recent) using the term "Governing Body", and let me know what it was from (WT, AW, etc) , and page number, it was in? Thanks so much.

Governing Body = rubber stamp for WTS legal department. This is what is know as a "spiritual body" chosen by God.
It is now a figurehead and ceremonial group and nothing more.
This is all Bible-Based(tm).

In the June 15, 2004 WT, in the article entitled "Gilead Graduates Go Forth as Zealous Harvest Workers!", the following is found:
"The opening remarks by Theodore Jaracz, a member of the Governing Body..."
"Next, Gerrit Losch, a member of the Governing Body..."
"The audience had an opportunity to hear from Stephen Lett, another member of the Governing Body."

Sorry, butterflygal, my WT literature is all boxed up. But I see that Blondie's answered your question, so I guess all's well.

I suspect someone's heard a whisper of a change, but it's got mixed up in the telling (just like Chinese whispers ).
I've heard that the Governing Body are stopping using the term President when referring to the chairman of the Governing Body, even when they were the same. This is to try to persuade the 'sheep' of the fiction that there has always been a separation between the 'legal' corporations (which are massively wealthy) and the 'spiritual' Governing Body (whose members are all paupers and have taken, along with every other member of the Bethel family, a vow of poverty).
This is utterly shameful of them, as its purpose is to try to insulate the corporations from the potentially massive claims of child abuse victims. (This is also the reason behind the multitude of new corporations formed a few years ago: the idea was to 'dilute' the assets held by any one corporation.)
For an example, see July 1, 2004 Watchtower, page 26, 27: "So when Nathan H. Knorr, who at the time was taking the lead in the worldwide Kingdom work... In January 1942, when Brother Rutherford died, Nathan was given the responsibility of oversight of the worldwide work of Jehovah's Witnesses."
