The WT magazine has been continuously published since 1879. I think they're proud of the 125-year longevity of their magazine, when compared with other religious magazines.
As far as their claim to spiritual lineage, the Witnesses link themselves to all called faithful "witnesses" in the Bible, including Jesus himself. The first "witness" was supposedly Abel who according to Genesis was killed by his brother Cain. So that goes back almost 6000 years.

There were so many offshoots of the "Bible Students" Russell founded (after he died), and they all claim to be spiritual heirs of ol' CT and some, to this day, study only Russell's original publications. From what I understand, Rutherford basically stole the Watchtower or took it over rather hostily which lead to many leaving and starting their own groups.
