On the nighttime news downunder is this story which is the latest "instalment" of something that's gripped the attention of those downunder mob for the past 25 years:

Lindy hopes dingo story is true
    22:20 AEST Tue Jul 6 2004

Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton says she hopes the latest claims about what happened to her daughter Azaria are true.

And she feels no hatred towards the man who has kept his claims about finding the lifeless body of Azaria in the jaws of a dingo a secret for nearly 25 years.

"It would be nice if he was right because it could put everything to rest," Mrs Chamberlain-Creighton told Channel Nine's A Current Affair.

Mrs Chamberlain-Creighton was jailed for life in 1982 for baby Azaria's murder but was freed from jail in 1986 and officially pardoned in 1987.

"There's no point of holding grudges, the only person you hurt is yourself," she said.

"If this man is telling the truth he's hurt himself enough."

She said she has spoken with Frank Cole about his claims and forgives him for not coming forward earlier.

Mr Cole, 78, a pensioner from suburban Pascoe Vale, says he shot a dingo that had the dead body of a baby in its jaws near Uluru in 1980.

He apologised to Mrs Chamberlain-Creighton and her former husband Michael Chamberlain for not going to the police with his story earlier.

"Look, I'm terribly sorry if I've ruined your lives or if I'm the cause of the breaking up of your marriage or her going to jail, you know," Mr Cole told Channel Nine.

"But how can you undo something that's done."

He said he could recall everything that happened that night when he shot the dingo because it was so "shocking".

"When I went over I see this bundle laying there and I bent down and I put my torch on it ... it was a baby, I nearly died," he said.

Mr Cole said the baby was covered in wet blood and had marks on the front and back of its head which looked like the dingo had grabbed it from the back of the head, and its left ear was missing.

He said three of his friends went to the campsite with the intention of telling authorities of the grisly find but they became scared.

Thank's for that Ozzie. I heard some of it but got distracted.

I don't think I could be quite that forgiving.

We'll probably hear a lot more about it in the next few days.
