This quote from Gen. referring to life in the Garden gave me pause to post a question to anyone who might have special interest in weather science.

If, as according to the way JWs understand the Biblical account, the pre-flood earth was enshrouded in a global mist under a canopy of water, where are the weather systems which are needed to create wind. Remember, for this "Canopy" theory to be true we have to eliminate normal daytime heating as the cause for a "breezy" time of the day, since daytime heating would have caused cloud build-up and inevitibly caused it to rain - which apparently wasn't a feature of pre-flood life.

Do you think that the necessary elimination of weather systems - in order to maintain a "canopy" - goes against well understood laws of our physical world?

No one really understands everything about weather. The earth is too complex a physical system for that. There is interaction among atmosphere, ocean, solar heating, radiation to space, cloud cover, etc etc etc.

You've hit on a serious problem for JW 'science' writers. First, there is no evidence at all that there ever was a JW-style 'canopy' of water or water vapor. There is a great deal of evidence that no such thing could possibly exist, because physical laws would have to be violated in order to maintain such a massive canopy. Further, there is plenty of fossil evidence that rain has occurred for hundreds of millions of years, before even the beginning of life on land.

You're probably right that a JW-style insulating canopy would dampen wind out drastically. For a "breezy part of the day" to occur, you certainly need significant solar heating. We who have lived in areas that are cloudy for weeks on end know that there is no "breezy part of the day" generally, because of the lack of solar heating. Since Genesis talks about such a thing, it means at least one of two things: the JW notion of a canopy is completely wrong, or Genesis itself is screwed up. Take your pick.

There are many other massive problems with this so-called canopy theory. Here is one example:

Young-earth creationists actually originated this canopy notion, and generally talk about the earth having been in a mild, greenhouse state where weather was very tame. However, that leads to a serious problem with the oceans. Today, ocean currents move massive amounts of water from top to bottom and from pole to pole. This circulation has many benefits, including circulating oxygen down to the bottom, where many life forms exist. The circulation is driven by solar heating in the tropics. Without such circulation, the oceans would quickly turn into a fairly stagnant pool where no oxygen would exist below perhaps 200 meters down -- a situation much as exists today in the Black Sea. Since many life forms exist that are adapted for deep ocean life, they cannot have been either created or evolved in the last few thousand years. Therefore, the existence of these life forms proves that a greenhouse climate did not exist a few thousand years ago.

    Thanks for your response Alan.

Your mention of the origins of the "canopy" theory was interesting. I had always assumed that this idea came from the Bible writers themselves as a means of bolstering their Flood Theory.

But either way, you still end up trying to mesh what science tells us with the fictions of Bible writers.
