BOISE, Idaho - The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals staged a 'Live Make-Out Tour' on Friday to promote vegetarian eating.

The event ? in which a scantily clad couple make out in a bed set up on a city sidewalk ? is meant to demonstrate PETA's claims that vegetarians are better lovers, PETA spokesman Ravi Chand said.

Additional activists were to pass out information about the health benefits of vegan living.

A city spokesman gave the OK for the couple to canoodle because they were making a political statement.

"The city welcomes public discussion on important issues and this is certainly an important issue to some," said Michael Zuzel, spokesman for Mayor Dave Bieter. "As long as they're not obstructing the sidewalk or creating a public nuisance, they're fine."

Though both the city and the state have public indecency laws, Zuzel said he did not believe the demonstration would violate them. Besides, he said, political events are given more leeway in the rules.

Animals of the field are killed by several factors, including:

    1. Tractors and farm implements run over them.
    2. Plows and cultivators destroy underground burrows and kill animals.
    3. Removal of the crops (harvest) removes ground cover allowing animals on the surface to be killed by predators.
    4. Application of pesticides.

So, every time the tractor goes through the field to plow, disc, cultivate, apply fertilizer and/or pesticide, harvest, etc., animals are killed. And, intensive agriculture such as corn and soybeans (products central to a vegan diet) kills far more animals of the field than would extensive agriculture like forage production, particularly if the forage was harvested by ruminant animals instead of machines. So perhaps fewer animals would be killed by producing beef, lamb, and dairy products for humans to eat instead of the vegan diet envisioned by Regan.

Too bad they feed all those pesky starving humans with that food. If only all those humans would just ... go away or something the animals could just live in peace.

I like the sense of humor PETA shows with this type of protest; this reminds me of their ?I?d rather go naked than wear fur? campaign.

Anyway, I?m vegan myself and support the work they do.

Nosferatu, I?ve heard those very arguments before, but they aren?t very effective against vegetarianism/veganism. Yes, field animals are sometimes killed by farming, but unlike factory farming, it isn?t intentional slaughter of thousands of animals. Furthermore, plants must be grown to feed the cows, pigs, and chickens we keep in captivity for food. So if people stopped eating animals, we would need less grain to feed them, and thus would kill fewer field animals.
