Since the spring of 1990 in the US, there has no been a charge for the magazines or books either to JWs or the people at the door, just a donation to the preaching work is requested.

In the rest of the world I think it went to this arrangement in 2000.

When I came back from the meeting I have better have more money in my wallet that when I went, cause they would have to pay me to go there and listen to that crap and they would have to pay me a lot!

As for the cost of the mags, the WTS should be fined for killing trees without good cause! Mav

I used to sell errr.. place them for a nickleI each. I always assured the sympathetic householder ( I still shudder at that word) that this just covered the cost of printing.

I'm not sure what is the expected donation these days but I'm sure that I's much cheaper that Charmin double roll.

No amount is expected or suggested as to the donation. Most JWs are uncomfortable with asking for a donation and don't. The only time you hear it mentioned is on the platform during the service meeting when presentations of the mags are demonstrated. You can tell that even then they aren't comfortable doing it.

Good call, Blondie! Man, I'm telling you, no one, and I mean no one, ever asks for a donation. Are you nuts? It's hard enough just to get through your presentation and get the mags into their hands, and now you're going to try to get them to give you money? I don't think I ever saw Witnesses do this, except maybe with a well-established return visit, and even that was like walking on eggshells.

The magazines were one of the biggest frustrations for me during my final months as a JW. I hated having a regular stream coming in, when it was so hard to place them that I always ended up with extras. I reduced my order to one issue of each, which were just for me personally. I figured borrowing mags from other people was much easier because you could give them back if you didn't place them. And if you did place them, heck, you were doing the person a favor. I think it was at this point that I first started understanding the whole treadmill aspect of the org. Subconsciously, anyway.

Sorry for the tangent. Just got me thinking.

kls, good sign that your hubby still has all the money so he is not donating.

On the other hand, I have some bad feelings about secretly checking his money. Why not just calmly ask him?

Last time I went out in the minstry work I sold the mags for 8d.

Sometimes I'd let them have 4 for 1/-.

Books though were very expensive, normally 3/6d.

Wow Englishman...last time you went out was a while back eh!I can remember them being 5p for the two when i was very young.I also remember 1992 or 93 (i forget)when the new arrangement started in the UK...all Elders and Ms were sworn to secrecy for about a Week!I took a perverse pleasure in not disclosing to anyone what the "new"information was...of course everyone was desperate to find out....

One rumour doing the rounds was that we knew the Date of Armageddon!
