A lot of the JWs I knew were self employed and some had employees. Most of them had no idea how to run a business properly.
It's true, false religion is very involved in business. The JW involvement in the cleaning industry is evidence of that.

Go back and find the thread on honesty... "thats all I have to say about that"
I seem to have read some papers that noted self - employment is a common tool among JW's and other cults to limit association with the outside world.
Besides a few of the "brothers" need to have a business to provide meaningful employment to the other "brothers"... I tried working for a few JW's over the years and would rather swim with sharks.

I'd have to answer no to that question. In my family, being a JW and a business owner is a bad combination:
My great uncle owned a small engine shop that was doing quite well; his family built a new house, got a new car, new etc. Then he got this idea that his 14-year-old son could run the shop while he ran errands around town. A customer comes in to have such-and-such worked on. Common sense (which there was a lack of in the first place), or goverment laws on safety or whatever tell the average consumer to stay the hell out of the workarea of whatever mechanic shop you deal with. Well, this customer was almost severely burned, but recovered well enough to sue my uncle for $50,000. And she got it. And my uncle became a boozer and almost lost everything. The last time I visited them, they said something to the effect of they were disenchanted with the organization, or something.
But you're probably thinking that this story has nothing to do with trying to be a JW and a business owner at the same time. Don't worry, I'm getting to that...
My grandfather got really jealous of my great uncle and decided to try his hand at business by opening a neighborhood store. I wanted nothing to do with it, because I know the way he runs things. And I really didn't want to be blamed for anything either, which also happens. Because he was a Witness, he could not sell booze or smokes. And any street-smart person knows that in a black neighborhood, ya gots to have the "fo-ties" (40-oz malt liquor) and the "newpotes" (menthol cigarettes). Which we didn't. And on top of that, he was letting people get things on credit, which they didn't pay back. Well, you can see where this is going.

Most JWs are crappy business people and they further compund their problems by hiring all the sob story friends with no skills. I have my own firm and will never hire another witness. Now they are honest but I'm not an ice cream stand where they could pocket money. Funds come in cheques or wire transfers. Too much gossip, especially about how much I make. They get jealous, tell people, etc. I was there at 7am, left 1am and they bitch about working a whole 30 hours a week and I also work weekends when needed. Stay poor lazy asses! And blame satan for being poor, not your weak ass work ethic!
I general I say no.
My mother has a sucessful business and like an idiot hired a bunch of people with out highschool diplomas(jws that literally never graduated), she over pays them, and never fires them for nearly getting here sued out of business every 3 week. She basically does it because she does not want to put "undue hardship" on them. Her other JW friend that also has a sucessful biz told her she is an idiot for hiring JWs, or realatives, and told her how to slowly phase out every JW employee. She is slowly but surely doing it.
The thing is she has these drop outs working when people with phds, and masters have offered to work for her at the same price. She is slowly learning better.
I think the thing that makes jws do this is the fact many pre 1990's JWs are so poor, and they know all the JW jargon, and taboos. Even adult children of JWs seem to get first pick over a regular "wordly" person. I think JW owners are embrassed to have their subordinants know they are in such a contrversial religion. As if your Janitor is going to start humming kingdom meleodies 5 minute before the lunch break is over and walking the halls with a please be seated sign. But back to the poor thing many jws have dead end jobs because they never went to school and have already started a family. Many have to fight for employment on the same level with illegal immigrants. This makes JW that own a biz targets of constant soliciting when Brother or Sister X losses their job. Plus it makes other JWs evious.
While a finely tuned prefessional staff of jws can work magic the odds of finding the right people are almost nhil unless you are in one of those monastic buildings in NY.
Face it in the real world JWs are only good cashiers (the ice cream stand remark was on target). Since atms and self service is totally taking over a long with check 21 the advantages of hiring a jw are dwarfed by that of a PoP terminal. Personally I like JWs but not enought to settle for substandard services. If you are a JW owner you are going to actually be gasp objective! Thus realizing JWs are no better than anyone else. The horror.
I've had my business for thirty-five years, (not cleaning either.) I also have side-line business. One of my sons has his own business. I've always encouraged people to have their own business, just count the cost. I must say, we had more rope back in the forties and early fifties being a JW, at least I did. Guest77
Remember all the articles in times past how witnesses were praised as good and honest and faithful workers? How they work at all things as if to Jehovah?... saying even "worldly" people recognized it and would hire only witnesses?... Are they still printing that stuff? I haven't seen it in years. All I remember over the last few years is articles on how witnesses SHOULD be. (Cause they know they're not)
After my experience with working with one, I would NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER do it again. That's another whole story. Soon.
As for owning your own business....In Florida that's about the only way one could make a living.
NEVER! (I missed one)
