I'm shopping for a new bed...

I've never liked my twin-sized innerspring mattress that I've used for the past 10 years, so I've decided to upgrade.

I went to a local bed dealer today and found that I liked the foam mattresses the best. The set I tried wasn't the memory-foam material that is all the rage right now, it was more like a conventional mattress with a polyurethane foam core instead of springs. They also had latex foam beds, but these were quite expensive, although it is my understanding that latex foam mattresses last 20-30 years.

Does anybody have experience with mattresses that uses either of these two types of foam for the core?

One of my concerns about foam mattresses is that I suspect that they may be quite hot and therefore not very happifying during the hot and humid summers we get here in the midwest.

I have a foam mattress and it's about the same as the old inner spring I had for summer comfort.

Be forwarned..... it seems to weigh about 3 X as much as an innerspring unit...... I need help to move the bed around the room.

Now... I just need someone to use up the other space......... It's a Queen size.

Thanks hill - how would you rate the bed comfort-wise? And is your bed latex, polyurethane, or memory-foam? Of course the salesman told me that once you go foam, you never go back.

Dan-----I have a latex version... and it was a close-out when I bought it a couple of years ago.

I like this one alot. I need a firm matress (discs and arthiritis troubles) I hear the newer improved versions are even better.

I have a memory foam mattress topper, which works quite well if you are not sleeping on your side - which would require more depth.

Although the name brand memory foam stuff is expensive, (Tempurpedic) you can get the same thing from other companies for less now. Just look at the foam density as many are less dense than the Tempurpedic, but tehre are some that is even more dense.

The temperature does become an issue, maybe particularly with the foam mattress material because it is temperature sensitive. One thing I have tried though is the "Chillow" from the Discovery store, essentially it is a thin sponge filled with water. This may defeat the temperature sensitive function of the memory foam to an extend, but maybe not completely. Anyway, I don't know if they have a version for the mattress, but the pillow version seemed to work pretty well. So the two together might be a nice combo.

We have a Select Comfort mattress that we bought in '99. Hubby liked it so well that when we took our next motorhome trip, we put it in the motorhome. Schlepped it back into the house after the trip and bought one for the motorhome too.

Really, quite often I lie there and just wallow in how good it feels.

    Thanks Hill.

Mark, I had never heard of a Chillow, I checked it out on a couple of websites and I think I'll give one a try. My sister and bro-in-law purchased a memory foam mattress last year, she likes it pretty well, he's not as keen on it but he never gives anything a ringing endorsement lol.

talley, I see informercials for the Select Comfort mattresses all the time, they look nice but I wish they weren't so expensive, I'm trying to stay under $600 for a queen size bed.
