Internet credit/debit card fraud

  Saturday morning I woke up and went to my computer to check my bank account to verify that my paycheck direct-deposit had appeared. It was there but so were four charges that I could not account for.

  All four charges were for something called http://www.skype.net Something I have never heard of.

  I called the bank and they said that the charges were from over-seas and that they had complaints from other customers about charges from the same place.

  My bank has an internet fraud guarantee, so all of the money will be credited back to my account and they are sending me a new card.

  So far there is no harm done to me, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up incase you see something similar appear on your credit or debit card.

  FWIW, I remember reading that SKYPE is an internet based telephone service. For computer-to-computer calls, there is no charge to the user, but for computer-to-phone calls, the user pays.

  Yeah... I'm guessing that someone managed to hack a business that I purchased something from and then used my card number to make phone calls.

  The bank rep I spoke with asked me a bunch of questions related to possible ways someone could have gotten my card information and I answerd "no" to all of them, so I can only guess that the number was stolen from a vendor.

  I have had fraudulent charges on my card and the bank reversed them without any hassle. I don't even have internet fraud-specific protection on my card.

  This is one reason I love online banking. I use MS Money and it downloads transactions every day as they clear.

  You may have a virus that did that. I've heard of it. Check for viruses and spyware.
