Little Penguin Merlot http://www.thelittlepenguin.com/wines/merlot.html
Merlot is not my preferrence (it was a passing fad with me about 15 years ago). Now I prefer the blended Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot. I find that it cuts down the peppery features that are so typical of many merlots and provides a more rounded and balanced bouqet.
The other day I was at a restaurant and the owner sat with me and cracked open a few bottles. One was this Australian brand Little Penguin and it was a straight Merlot. It was fabulous. One of the easiest drinking Merlots that I have ever had. I highly recommend it as it is reasonably priced.
Now I also know that you like your Shiraz. I would like to suggest that you venture outside of Ozzieland (assmunig your local wine store carries California brands) and see if you can locate a California version Syrah of a brand named R.H. Phillips. A much smaller vineyard than the well known Californians like Mondavi,Gallo or Fetzer. It will surprise the hell out of you. I am willing to put my personal guaranty on this one. http://www.rhphillips.com/
